And the rain keeps coming As the rain and wind continue to blow through San Luis Obispo County, safety hazards, damage and closures are inevitable. Below you will find a list of the current conditions for County Parks facilities: ... Bob Jones Trail: The San Luis Creek along the trail is rising fast and may start flooding soon. Ranger staff will check the area throughout the day. The trail will be closed if flooding occurs. All other County Parks trails have been closed. Vaca Road at Santa Margarita Lake is closed. Shamel Park: Santa Rosa Creek is overflowing causing flooding in the parking lot and on Windsor Blvd. Golf Courses are still open but are subject to adjusted hours. Reindeer Trivia Part III Are reindeer the only mammals that can see ultraviolet light? Humans can see light in a range of wavelengths, from about 700 nanometers (in the red spectrum) to 400 nanometers (in the violet spectrum). Reindeer can see light to 320 nanometers, in the ultraviolet (UV) range. This ability lets reindeer see things in the icy white of the Arctic that they would otherwise misskind of like viewing the glow of a white object under a blacklight. Things... like white fur and urine are difficult, even impossible, for humans to see in the snow, but for reindeer, they show up in high contrast. #slocoparks #countyparks #slocountyparks #slocounty #countyofslo #reindeer #trivia #christmas #santaclaus #santa #holidays See more

Oceano Memorial Park Basketball Court Gets Lines Ranger staff have finished painting lines on the basketball court at Oceano Memorial Park. The concrete pad is almost exactly half the length and width of a regulation court. Despite the size restrictions, they managed to lay down a regulation free throw line and key for players in the community. The concrete pad was over 8 inches thick with no signs that rebar was tied into the slab resulting in several large, raised crac...ks. Staff ground the cracks down and filled them in with a durable product that will hopefully last quite some time. As you can see, people are already enjoying them! #slocoparks #slocountyparks #countyparks #slocounty #countyofslo #basketball #basketballcourts #courts #oceanomemorialpark #oceanopark #oceano See more

Reindeer Trivia Part II How were reindeer originally connected to Santa? Before Moore wrote A Visit from Saint Nicholas (a.k.a. The Night Before Christmas) in 1823, no one thought about reindeer in conjunction with Santa Claus. Moore introduced the world to Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder and Blixem (the last two of which were later changed from Dutch to German, becoming Donner and Blitzen). While the first six names all make sense in English, t...he last two in German mean thunder and flash, respectively. As for little Rudolph, he wasn’t introduced until catalog writer Robert L. May wrote a children’s book in verse for his employer, Montgomery Ward, in 1939 titled Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. #slocoparks #countyparks #slocountyparks #slocounty #countyofslo #reindeer #trivia #christmas #santaclaus #santa #holidays See more

Park Ranger Tim Faes spent three days pruning this Yucca tree at Coastal Dunes. It had been 20+ years since the last time it was done. Some call this tree a Spanish Dagger and it definitely spiked him a few times to remind him of how it got its name. As you can see here, it is a beautiful plant in the right setting. #slocoparks #countyparks #slocountyparks #parks #slocounty #countyofslo #parksandrecreation #yucca #spanishdagger #nature #pruning #plant

Reindeer Trivia Part I Are Reindeer and Caribou the same thing? Historically, the Eurasian reindeer and American caribou were considered to be different species, but they are actually one and the same: Rangifer tarandus. There are two major groups of reindeer, the tundra and the woodland, which are divided according to the type of habitat the animal lives in, not their global location. The animals are further divided into nine to 13 subspecies, depending on who is doing... the classification. One subspecies, the Arctic reindeer of eastern Greenland, is extinct. #slocoparks #countyparks #slocountyparks #slocounty #countyofslo #reindeer #trivia #christmas #santaclaus #santa #caribou #holidays See more
