"Journey to Orquevaux" was based on painter and photographer Terri Froelich's journey to an artist-in-residence program in France last October. Froelich's two-day driving trip from Paris was about purposefully getting lost and photographic journaling the colors and shapes along the way through the French countryside. "The practice of photography, seeing the balance and composition through my lens, is like a muscle memory that guides my painting, says Froelich who is based in... the San Francisco Bay Area. "My challenge is to reconcile diverse and sometimes conflicting experiences into a balanced piece of art that exposes strong personal meaning. Curated by Michelle Bello. Miya Ando hand bleaches, dyes, and sews together skeleton leaves from Bodhi trees to create these large-scale mandalas. The Buddha is said to have obtained enlightenment beneath a Bodhi tree, making it a significant symbol in Buddhism. Ando, a descendant of Bizen swordsmiths, was raised in both a Buddhist temple in Japan and in rural Northern California. Her works have been collected and exhibited in museums around the world including The Noguchi Museum in NYC, Los Angeles Mu...seum of Modern Art, and The Lyft Museum in Germany. David Becker’s "Buddha Paintings" are complex overlays of rectilinear, organic, and figurative painting, the figuration comprised of silhouetted images of Buddhist statues. Embedded in Becker’s gestural paint handling, the Buddhas raise questions about the correlation between art-making activity and mindful stillness. The "Buddha Paintings" re-interpret a wide array of the contemporary artistic cannon. They recycle cubism, collage and the gestural improvisations of abstract e...xpressionism, as well as grid painting, crazy quilts and the kind of cultural sampling we might associate with Robert Rauschenberg’s random imagery. To appreciate the contemporary relevancy of Becker’s non-objective and formal approach, viewers must look to the cohesion in his composite image. Becker borrows from various sources, but with an interdependence that synthesizes his historical references. The end result achieves in the midst of their jumble a sense of resolve, a whole. David Becker’s paintings at once provide us a window into change, and the tools to cope with it. Curated by Michelle Bello. Artwork: David Becker, "Buddha Painting #4 (Radio)" and "Buddha Painting #2 (Godot)," 2019, Acrylic on Canvas, 78" x 78" Each. Master printmaker Carrie Ann Plank's work deals with visual portrayals of information systems. Mapping, numerical sequences, fractals, wave patterns, sound sources, magnetic field variations and other systems of scientific observation overlay one another to create a pastiche of informationcreating abstraction from the concrete. Whether working on paper or mixed media on panel for her site-specific installations, Plank uses a mix of traditional skills, such as hand carving or... hand mixing ink, along with emergent technologic assistance. Gary Komarin’s pop paintings are icing on the cake. After studying with abstract expressionism guru Philip Guston, Komarin created his own rich paintings that are a balance between sophistication and simplicity with an abstract iconography all his own. Then he started painting images of cakes on top of paper bags. The cakes are painted from top down to bottom in one easy movement. The drips take place as paint overflows the brush. Just as with an actual cake being iced, the d...rips move in an unpredictable way. Knowing that it is a cake does not really say so much about what it will be like to eat it. Likewise, each of those painted cakes has its own flavor, its own feeling. One may taste sweet and delicate, while another tart and strong. Whether he paints on canvas or paper bags, there is a constant balancing act between cartoonlike expression and eloquent abstraction. His highly sought after works have been exhibited alongside the likes of Robert Motherwell, Larry Poon, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Curated by Michelle Bello. Artwork: Gary Komarin, Cake Black on White (2015, mixed media on paper, 53 x 48), "Cake Blue Black on Pumpkin" (2016, mixed media on paper, 53 x 24 Inches), "Cake Creme on Blue" (2017, Mixed Media on Paper, 53 x 24 Inches). Photographer Randal Ford says, Compared to his chimpanzee brother, Amari was a bit more calm and relaxed on set. I thought it would be interesting to further anthropomorphize him by placing Amari in a very human position. He was agreeable and was happy to pose for us. This shot in particular was inspired by the famous Auguste Rodin’s 'The Thinker.' Throughout the shoot, Amari would run around, dance, and then jump into my arms for a hug. A funky monkey, no doubt. Randal For...d spent the last ten years exploring our deep-rooted emotional connection with animals through the lens of portraiture. Wild animals are typically photographed in their natural habitat, but Ford chose to strip away context by photographing these animals close up and personal in his studio. Curated by Michelle Bello. David Becker has been quietly working in an Oakland warehouse for years, for the most part under the radar, showing rarely, producing a consistently strong body of painting. For all of his studio practice’s independence from the strains of the market, his work could hardly be described as naïve. In fact, it seems to deal with most every sophisticated current in the ongoing discussion of painting’s address to our culture and condition. He has woven together multiple threads of... recent art history and any given organizing principle in the work might depend upon the precedent one chooses to track. From the counterbalance of Alexander Calder’s mobiles, the opaque push and pull of Hans Hoffman’s abstraction, the gossamer layering of Robert Rauschenberg’s Combines, to the kitchen sink inclusiveness of Chris Martin’s post history, it’s all here, supporting a sampler quilt of paint’s possible vernacular range. Catherine Courtenaye’s body of work, "Avian Witness," is her ongoing response to the growing divide between the natural world and the manmade environment. As our natural areas are threatened and climate is changing, the artist is thinking about primeval forces: animal migration, magnetic pull, wind, tides, and is alert to these still-powerful natural patterns that intersect with the built landscape. Birds still migrate over vast built-up expanses of large cities. Game-crossin...g overpasses and underpasses are beginning to dot well-travelled highways in the West. Tides still rise and fall. Laurie Reid’s watercolors can be found in the heady collections of world-class museums including the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. She is a master of line, and it’s been our privilege to show her paintings over the years. Says Reid about her work,I don’t believe there’s such a thing as pure formalism. I do sometimes use a grid and other formal constructs, but there’s always the human hand involved. Psyche, material, formit is ...a concoction that has to be brewed just right." We hit the streets in search of post-Pop Art and discovered these dazzling abstractions by Robert Charles Dunahay. If you’re speeding past these simple graphic forms, you might miss that they're actually close-ups of lines painted on streets or highways. Dunahay, who mixes acrylic paint with actual materials used to pave California’s roads, offers, When used in the context of a Pop Art inspired ubiquitous everyday subject like a section of highway or road, it really works br...illiantly! You just want to touch the glittering pavement." Curated by Michelle Bello. Artwork: Robert Charles Dunahay, "Crosswalk" (2018, mixed media on canvas, 65" x 65"), "Highway" (2018, mixed media on canvas, 65" x 65"), "Highway" (detail view, 2018, mixed media on canvas, 65" x 65"). Peter Boyer’s works at Sloan Miyasato Fine Art exude presence. Elegant yet strong, they reflect his interests in Asian and Japanese aesthetic form as well as his affinity for architecture and building-related materials. They appeal to us for their subtle modulation of colors, richly varied textures and bold calligraphic strokes. Curated by Michelle Bello. Kaoru Mansour’s paintings are nothing short of sublime. Part still life, part landscape, this LA based artist experiments with interior and exterior spaces to create a contemporary yet magical place. Painted from life, her delicately colored fruits and fauna are covered with more than 20 layers of encaustic. A muted, butter-like background holds the image which is glazed over to form a cracked, raku-like surfacea nod to her Japanese heritage. Delicate abstract lines swirl ar...ound and attach to the branches, creating new otherworldly plant forms. Curated by Michelle Bello. Artwork: Kaoru Mansour, "Blackberry and Chandelier" (2015, acrylic, 22K gold leaf, ink on canvas, 54" x 44"), "Figs and Chandeliers" (2015, acrylic, silver leaf, glass beads, ink on canvas, 54" x 44"), "Blackbird and Chandelier" (2016, acrylic 22k gold leaf, silver leaf, ink on canvas, 48" x 24).
