Today, we join people across the country in honoring Indigenous Peoples Day. The movement to replace the Columbus Day began right here in Berkeley 28 years ago. John Curl, one of the original organizers says, "All we did was plant the seeds for this, and we’ve just tended to it for over 20 years." This year, rather than an in-person celebration, the annual event will take place via Zoom. Research shows that showing ourselves kindness and understanding rather than criticism motivates us to do better. How do you foster this self-compassion? One way is to write a letter to yourself from the perspective of a loved one that expresses the acceptance and understanding we are often quick to show others but not ourselves.
