SLAM IN THE SHUTDOWN POETRY SLAM Dateline: Union City, CA, July 14th 2020 Our youth absorb these tormenting times with unfiltered intensity and need the release valve of self expression as they are forced to process a world gone mad. ... This is a uniquely uncertain moment in history. Something microscopic has reconstructed the planet's entire human system leaving us vulnerable in every way. There is even a comet in the sky, the original prophet of doom! The office of Richard Valle, President, Alameda County Board of Supervisors. District 2 has set up a poetry slam competition called SLAM IN THE SHUTDOWN for the youth of District 2. (Hayward, Union City, Fremont, Newark), inviting them to use their voices to scream, pray, shout, question and ultimately close the distance with poetry. A poetry slam is the competitive art of performance poetry. It puts emphasis on both writing and performance, encouraging poets to focus on what they’re saying and how they’re saying it. All the works will also be collected and published into a book, serving as an archive of this moment to history. The competition will be held as an online video event starting August 8th, open for middle school though under twenty four with cash prizes for every participant. We intend to expand this to all districts of Alameda County at a later date. You can enter through the website SLAMMINGDOWN.COM or on the Facebook page SLAMMING DOWN
