Sierra Club Tour of Sky Mountain Permaculture! Everyone welcome. Saturday, October 19, 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM See how six acres of scorched earth, burned during the 2014 Cocos Fire, was restored into a fire-safe, drought-tolerant, rainwater harvesting, and permaculture demonstration garden. During the tour, you will see how erosion-prone areas were turned into water saving solutions by using permaculture techniques such as:... *swales *infiltration ponds *hugelculture beds * and terraces ... to significantly reduce the need for supplemental irrigation. You will see how permaculture gardens integrate habitat and food for birds, butterflies, and bees with an abundance of edibles for people. Check out the earthbag dome, strong enough to withstand fires and earthquakes! Enjoy visiting this beautiful riparian area with Escondido Creek running through it.
Learn how to use eco arts and permaculture to heal yourself, get a deeper connection with nature and heal the earth. Children are welcome.
What if I told you that the most nutritious foods were growing in your back garden so you could eat them for free? Wild edibles like dandelion have seven times more phytonutrients than spinach! Find out more at this workshop.

Ron MccCord has mastered the art and science of making sub-irrigated wicking beds and will be teaching how to do it this Saturday at the Creating Sustainable Garden Architecture Workshop at Sky Mountain Permaculture from 8:30 AM to 1 PM.
We hope you can make it to the workshop this Saturday, where you will have the opportunity to learn how to make, not only, arbors, benches and sub-irrigated wicking beds but also to make eco arts in the woods. Perfect for children and adults who just want to relax and express their creativity.
This Cross Section illustrates how a hugelkultur bed should be constructed. Notice how there are no air space between the logs and branches so that water can be wicked from the bottom to the top of the bed. If you just bury a pile of logs or make your logs and branch layers to thick there will be to many air pockets between the wood and the they will prevent or hinder the ability of the bed to wick water up. Also soil, compost, and/or wood chip between the logs not only, wicks and holds water, but are the home of microorganisms the help break the wood down faster. To learn more about how to build hugelkultur beds comes to our Hugel-Swales Turn Fire Hazards into Water Saving Food Forests workshop on July 20th, from 8:30 AM to 1 PM, at Sky Mountain Permaculture.
On July 20th, we are going to break out the excavator and get digging for the Hugel-Swales Turn Fire Hazards into Water Saving Food Forests workshop that combines hugelkultur, indigenous ethnobotanical plants, pollinators, water harvesting, fruit trees, fire preparedness, and funding opportunities for your project. We have four permaculture experts who are going teach you the step by step process of how to layout and build hugelkultur beds and swales, how to combine the mo...st important food, medicinal and fiber plants used by the indigenous peoples of our region with fruit trees and other support plants, and the best plants for attracting pollinators and beneficial insects to you landscape. A workshop like this would usually cost over 100 dollars. Because of a grant from Partners with Fish and Wildlife we are able to offer it for free. We hope you can make it. See more
The whole world is a garden, and what a wonderful place it would be, if we each took care of our part of the planet, our garden. Come see us here in Del Mar, May 31st through July 4th. We have created a garden we hope will inspire you like it has inspired us. Pollinators need our help. We are here to shine a light on the pollinator pathway. Please come see us all month of June at the San Diego County Fair
