Today we presented an overdue honor to Library Security Officer Lauren Vargas. Late last year, Lauren's quick thinking in administering naloxone to a person who had overdosed resulted in the person being revived. Lauren's actions personify UPD's dedication to keeping the campus community safe and secure every day. Incidentally, Corporal Rafael Vargas has also been a recipient of the Lifesaving Award so it appears it's a couples thing . Well done, Vargas family!

Is it October already? That means it's Breast Cancer Awareness Month and you'll be seeing our officers rocking pink patches on their uniforms. If you'd like to purchase a UPD pink patch, drop by our Parking Services Office. They're only $10 each and all proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

It's National Police Women's Day! These are our sisters in the UPD family whose hard work and dedication inspire the next generation of women in law enforcement to serve our communities.

Today we lower our department flag to honor those who died 19 years ago in New York City, the Pentagon and Shanksville. To the firefighters, police officers, emergency medical personnel and dispatchers who ran into danger and gave comfort to the victims, we salute you ALL. May our country be united again as it was in the aftermath of this tragedy. Never forget.

Today Sergeant Wong and Officer Chaidez were assigned to help out in the Ben Lomond area. While on patrol they met Mary, a resident who needed supplies but didn't have a working vehicle. They didn't hesitate driving to Scotts Valley and picking up some groceries for her. Well done, fellas! And thanks to Santa Cruz County for your support!

UPD continues to help with the Santa Cruz County CZU Lightning Complex Fires. Last night officers patrolled the communities of Bonny Doon, Brookdale and Davenport. They also assisted the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter in helping feed pets and animals left behind by residents. Officers will support mutual aid efforts through the weekend. Thanks to Corporal Vazquez for the pics.

Some of our officers are assisting in areas affected by the CZU Lightning Complex Fires today. Officer Newman is assigned to maintain security in the community of Ben Lomond. Our prayers are with all those affected by these fires. We hope you return to your homes soon!

Typically at 9 AM on the first day of school the intersection of 7th and San Salvador Street would be pretty congested. Today is very different. Regardless of where you are we hope you have a safe semester. Stay healthy, Spartans. Hope to see you all soon!

Why we do what we do. Sincere thanks to our community who continue to support UPD and provide opportunities for us to build relationships, one cute handshake at a time. It certainly made Officer Galindo's week worthwhile. Hope it makes your week, too.

Do you like cats? Many people are fond of cats. How about catalytic converters? Most people can't say they're fond of catalytic converters, unless that person might be stealing them. Recently, Officer Rivera contacted two individuals in a suspicious vehicle in the West Garage. The two individuals were arrested for possession of controlled substances, drug paraphernalia and a switchblade knife. Upon further search of the vehicle, officers discovered a firearm, airsoft guns, burglary tools and six catalytic converters! The subjects were booked into jail and the investigation is on-going. Thank you, Officer Rivera and dayshift patrol officers, for continuing to keep the campus safe!

We had a small birthday celebration today for one of the most beloved and unsung members of UPD, Irma Pagan. Irma is the chief's admin assistant and the Department wouldn't be able to function without her. True to her modest personality she didn't want us to post her picture. So Capt. Albin drew his best rendition of Irma to commemorate the occasion. As you can see we're desperately seeking special event artists, immediately! Many happy returns, Irma!

It feels like forever that we have remained here at SJSU and everyone else has been gone. Most of the buildings are empty and hardly any students to be seen or heard. Don't get us wrong, we are still out there helping people in need and preventing crimes. It has just been different, maybe a touch lonely. COVID has affected everyone to some degree, we are no different. We miss seeing all the students, faculty and staff around. We miss the bustling campus life. Just lik...e for many of you, getting things done during this time can be challenging. We still need the help of our campus partners and this one in particular went out of his way to make sure he did just that. We needed some keys made for buildings here at SJSU. We needed them quickly. A certain Spartan made a trek down to campus to make sure he had the keys we needed. This isn't the first time he has made a trip to UPD on the same day to help us out. This time was no different except that he brought us some baked goods and a really nice note. We would like to say to him, "Thank you for going above and beyond to make sure we have the tools we need. Your thoughtful gesture comes at a time when we are looking for any positive interactions. Thank you, you are just what we needed." See more

It's been a long week for law enforcement in this country, including UPD. So when the call went out to spread a little cheer our officers jumped at the opportunity. Meet Santiago. He's a ten year old with a very rare form of cancer, DIPG. Santiago is one of our sergeant's nephews and we joined a parade for him organized by his family and teachers. We hope you and your family enjoyed it as much as we did. Stay #SantiagoStrong! https://www.gofundme.com/f/santiago-fights-dipg
