Rediscovery Virtual Opening & Artist Walkthrough: Friday, May 13th, 04:00 - 05:30pm on New Art City Physical Opening Reception: Tuesday, May 10th, 06:00pm @ Gallery 5in the Art Building on SJSU's campus... Exhibition on view this week The CADRE Media Lab is proud to present Rediscovery, a hybrid exhibition that is available to view in New Art City and in person! Rediscovery features a wide range of work that manages to expand across a great variety of mediums within digital media art. This final exhibition serves as the platform in which one can experience the culmination of the graduating Seniors’ work in the BFA program. Rediscovery captures the essence of the artist amidst polarizing times. In a world permeated by aggregate crisis, malleable truths, and digital algorithms, artists in this exhibition are challenged to define their own standing in this world. Within the sea of limitations in the form of socio economics, inequality of opportunity, and societal norms, the artist is tasked with embodying such impediments as a means of overcoming them. By traversing through Rediscovery, one can reach the place within each artist where this feat occurs. Thus, a new conceivable world is reflected through these discoveries found in this curation of works. Prototyping Future Democracies Class Exhibition Art 106: Human Machine Interface Instructor Steve Durie with Jonathan Keats... On view in Theta Belcher Gallery In the United States and around the world, democracy is in peril. Caught up in partisan gridlock, and often indulging in corruption or bigotry, all too many politicians are unable or unfit to govern. What if we automated governance, guiding policy by biochemically monitoring the wellbeing of the populace? What if citizenship were expanded to enfranchise all people, as well as non-human animals and plants, supporting both social and environmental justice? These are some of the core questions addressed by San José State University’s Future Democracies Laboratory under the direction of experimental philosopher and artist Jonathon Keats. This immersive exhibition is the first public showcase of the lab’s provocative experiments, undertaken with SJSU’s student body under the guidance of Digital Media Arts adjunct professor Steve Durie. From a digital legislature to a banana-based polling apparatus, the speculative systems prototyped in the Future Democracies Laboratory seamlessly combine science, technology, and art to address some of the greatest challenges of our time. #prototypingfuturedemocracies @cadre_sjsu #humanmachineinterface #jonathankeats

Class Exhibition Art 197: BA Senior Projects Instructor Lance Fung @lance.m.fung On view in Jo Farb Hernández Gallery and Herbert Sanders Gallery... Inflorescenceaims to bridge the diverse talent, histories and philosophies of 18 graduating SJSU art students. This group exhibition not only acts as a freeze frame, capturing individual processes of blossoming, but as in nature severely challenges each artist to grow through experimentation, risk of failure, and hard work. Inflorescenceexplores the myriad of ideas, materials, and aesthetics so as to truly embrace the freedom and interdisciplinary nature of the Bachelor of Art Degree. Pictorial, Spatial, Photography and Digital Media Art seamlessly meanders through the two gallery spaces in hopes of providing a sense of discovery, reflection, and pride; paralleling those emotions of the graduating students. The artwork you will experience open a window into the soul through newly created work especially for this occasion. Each artwork was created with passion as well as the skill gained from their University studies with many pieces being a leap of faith and experimentation with new materials or increasing of scale. We hope you enjoy seeing the future the way one should view the world in a new paradigm and the future of our Art World. #inflorescence #BAseniorprojects #sjsuartgalleries
