The San Jose Area Writing Project is proud to host author Maia Kobabe to engage teachers in a crucial conversation about diversifying texts and writing forms as part of our 2022 Invitational Summer Institute. Kobabe's graphic novel, GENDER QUEER, was just named the most banned book in America, thus highlighting the absolute need for representation in our school libraries and curriculum. As a bonus, e will be leading our teachers in a graphic novel writing class! All K-12 teachers are welcome to apply to join us this summer! https://www.npr.org//efforts-to-ban-books-jumped-an-unprec https://www.sjawp.org/copy-of-invitational-summer-institute

Special thanks to River Brown for sharing this quickwrite she produced during SJAWP's No Bad Sundays Writing Group this afternoon... Here’s to the women and the men who work in education especially public education.... You carry concern for many young people, even if your cares are tucked into the back of your mind parts of the day. You have so many things, little things, timely things, clock things, present things, pressing things, mandated things, frustrating things, impossible things, expected things, hopeful things, that you have to do. Add to things the things you dream to do that don’t comply with policy, the things there’s no budget for, not for these kids And who has any idea of really how demanding your work is if they have not tried it. At least for a year. Here’s to the dreamers who believe in the love of learning, to the tough who stay up late and get up early to face the challenges that are invisible to some. Here’s to service. To your dignity. Here’s to your talent, your life long reading, your organizing skills, and the gentle way you measure how to address a tentative student. Here’s to the broad sweep of your compassionate hearts that want to turn water into wine -- that want the pixels to turn into real people with you.
The Undistancing workshop is filling up FAST! We're almost halfway full and registration has been live for less than 24 hours. Register now if you'd like to secure a spot! https://www.care.com//42549-undistancing-creating-class-co

"This was a phenomenal interview. We are so lucky to have Aeriale N. Johnson as a leader on our writing project team and on the NCTE steering committee. This is a must watch for K-12 educators, parents, and anyone who is committed to learning about antiracism. Also, preorder your Antiracist Baby books. Let’s get these in classrooms and homes across the US! This is "Antiracist Baby" by NCTE Vimeo on Vimeo, the home for high quality videos and the people who love them." - Jane Gilmore, SJAWP Associate Director
