Sister Elaine Stephan, CSJ August 24, 1937-October 11, 2020 Our beloved Sister Elaine Stephan, CSJ died yesterday in Los Angeles, CA, the same city where she had been born on August 24, 1937. ... Sister attended Mark Keppel Elementary in Paramount and Bellarmine-Jefferson High School in Burbank, both in California. She graduated from Mount Saint Mary’s College, now University, with a Bachelor of Arts degree and later obtained a Certification in Alcohol Studies from Seattle University in Washington State. During the first years as a sister, she ministered as an elementary school teacher but spent most of her career as a substance abuse counselor at different organizations around the greater Los Angeles area including Daniel freeman Hospital, Kazi House, Patterns Behavioral Health Services and Family Services of Los Angeles. She also worked at House of Yahweh, Didi Hirsch Community Center and A Place Called Home. Sister Elaine was known for her friendly smile, kind demeanor, zest for life and love for those who needed support in conquering addictions. May our dear Sister Elaine rest in peace. Her parents Kenneth and Beatrice and her beloved brother Kenneth have preceded her in death. Sister Ann remained close to the sisters as she attended Alhambra High School. She shared with Sister Mary Anne Bahner, CSJ her desire to become a sister. Her m...other compromised by allowing her to go to Mount St. Mary’s College, now University, for a year before entering our community in 1958. Sister Ann was an excellent science teacher before pursuing her dream. She opened The Bay Area Crisis Nursery in Concord, CA in September 1980 where she served as Director for more than 35 years. Sister Ann loved being a CSJ and gave great love and energy to her children and their families. Quiet and reserved, in daily Mass she received her strength. May she rest in peace.
