At its virtual monthly meeting on Monday, Jan. 4, the Wrigley Association voted for drafting a letter in solidarity with the Riverpark Coalition who is asking the Long Beach City Council for an Environmental Impact Review of the controversial Pacific Place Project. --- Kimberly Walters, a representative with the coalition, gave a presentation on the decades-long fight to secure the local parcels of land. They say the parcels were originally slated by the City of Long Beach to... be transformed into what Walters called essentially the West side version of El Dorado Park. --- Instead, the land once designated as an open space was changed to industrial and most recently commercial storage as it was sold to a developer who plans to build a three-story 152,745-square foot self-storage building with 1,132 units. Long Beach police on Friday, Jan. 8 sought public help to find a missing 76-year-old man with undisclosed medical conditions. --- Lester Jackson was last seen about 4 p.m. Thursday walking in the 1500 block of Daisy Avenue, according to the Long Beach Police Department. --- Jackson suffers from medical conditions and may become easily disoriented, according to a police statement. Long Beach is adapting to climate change and they have a 402-page plan to prove it. --- The Climate Action and Adaptation Plan was presented to the Long Beach City Council at their Tuesday, Jan. 5 meeting after years of work by city staff. --- The behemoth of a plan addresses a little bit of everything sea level rise, heat vulnerability, air quality, drought, energy usage, transportation and waste management.... --- The plan’s primary objective: dramatically reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030. In an attempt to curtail some of the most dire effects of climate change, the City will enter a multi-phased approach that will, in many ways, transform the way that the City operates. --- Though the council unanimously confirmed the plan, there is still much to be done. Long Beach Police Department on Thursday, Jan. 7 sought public help to solve the killing of a woman who was found dead in her home more than nine months ago. --- Terry Limas, 44, was discovered in the residence in the 1300 block of Taper Street about 10:40 p.m. last March 30, according to the LBPD. --- Based on suspicious circumstances, homicide detectives responded to the scene to investigate, according to a LBPD statement. Honduras Kitchen mobilizes to aid Honduras after devastation left by Hurricane Eta --- The images of children and women being evacuated from inundated homes is a reality Honduras and other Central American countries have been grappling with since Hurricane Eta made landfall on Tuesday, Nov. 3 with a Category 4 rating. --- According to La Tribuna, one of Honduras’ major daily newspapers, as of the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 10, the number of reported deaths due to the hurricane ...stood at 58. LB resident, ex-Torrance police officer agrees to plead guilty in firearms sales case --- A former officer with the Torrance Police Department has been charged with being an unlicensed firearms dealer who sold dozens of guns, as well as certifying he was the actual purchaser of a handgun, when, in fact, he was buying the weapon for another person, the U.S. Department of Justice announced today. --- Lindley Alan Hupp, 32, of Long Beach, was charged Friday in Los Angeles federa...l court with engaging in the business of dealing in firearms without a license, and making a false statement in a federal firearm licensee’s records during purchase of a firearm, according to the DOJ. --- Federal prosecutors also filed a plea agreement Friday in which Hupp agreed to plead guilty to the two felony offenses. --- According to court documents, Hupp sold at least 48 firearms during an 8 1/2-year period while employed by the Torrance PD. City awarded $160,000 grant to launch new Distracted Driving Prevention Program --- The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) has been awarded a $160,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to launch the City’s first Distracted Driving Prevention Program, which will offer education and awareness activities focused on reducing collisions related to distracted driving. --- The grant will be used to build on the City’s Greenl...ightLB Program, which provides health and safety information related to cannabis, and supports a variety of strategies to help prevent distracted driving. Long Beach to offer Community Learning Hubs for youth starting Nov. 16 --- Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) is offering a new Community Learning Hub Program for distance learning and after-school activities for kindergarten to eighth grade Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) students. --- The free hubs will provide a safe space with high-speed internet for students to complete distance learning assignments during the school day.... --- Youth will also have the option to participate in safe and enriching after-school activities, including academic support, sports, fitness and more. Long Beach announces another three weeks grace on business fees --- The City of Long Beach on Monday, Nov. 9, offered business owners affected by the Coronavirus pandemic another three weeks to pay some city fees that had been due March 16th. --- The statement said the City has extended the waiver of penalties related to the payment of any license taxes and health, fire and business licensing fees from March 16, 2020, to Nov. 30, 2020. Any bills issued during that time shoul...d still be paid, but no penalty will accrue until after Nov. 30. --- The policy follows direction from the City Council, which requested that the City Manager provide options for relief to restaurants and other businesses impacted by the pandemic, it said. --- In August, the City extended relief to restaurants and other businesses for licensing and health fees through Oct. 31.
