Sunday afternoon bee swarm. Got a call from Greta Thompson about this swarm, gave them a chance to move into the box, then expedited the process by shaking them onto the box. Will post another video of them marching in.

This is what a bee swarm looks like! Swarm season is coming up soon. When flowers start blooming and the weather is warming up, the queen starts the "spring build up" and will lay anywhere from 1500 to 2500 eggs a day. 18 to 21 days later they hatch and begin working within an hour. During swarm season the workers will create queen cells. When the queen lays an egg in each of these, the workers will feed the hatched eggs only royal Jelly. Before a new queen hatches the old q...ueen and about %60 of the workers will leave the hive and cluster (like the picture) somewhere close to the original hive. Scouts are sent out to find a new hive location. When most of the scouts are in agreement to where that is, the entire colony will fly there together to make a new hive. Swarms of bees are usually very docile as they have no hive to defend. Bee Keepers (like me) prepare boxes ahead of swarm season, so when people (like you) see or hear of a swarm they can call me, or a bee keeper near them to come and capture them. Bee boxes are engineered with the bees in mind and once we introduce the bees to it, they are usually happy to move into a cozy new suitable home. Honey is what they give me in appreciation for the home I give them. See more

Here is a great example of how bee's are looking for an appropriate place to build a hive. When they find it, you are hard pressed to keep them from moving in. Towards the end, you can see the queen march in.
