This picture tells the story of thousands of men who came from all over the country and the world to strike it rich in the gold fields of California. After months, maybe years, of trying to make a living panning the creeks and rivers many were forced to settle for working undergound or in the mills for the big mining companies. Unknown location. Geroge Baker Collection

The Bigelow House, Sierra City, California. Pictured is the Bigelow House, a hotel that once stood behind the existing Masonic Hall, was torn down several decades ago. It was constructed by Hartwell Holden Bigelow (1820-1893) who operated it as a hotel from 1870-1881. D.N. Mitchell was afterwards the proprietor (his name can still be seen on the hotel sign at the Kentucky Mine). Another building, also known as The Bigelow House, is a residence that still stands next to the Holly House on Main St. (HWY 49) was constructed by Hartwell's brother Orson Bigelow (1816-1894) in 1867. Orson and H.H. Bigelow were natives of New York. (information from Cory Peterman)

Wade Cornwell mentioned Camp Pioneer yesterday, and it just so happens that the Plumas Museum has a photo from Eastman of Camp Pioneer. So the photo is courtesy of the Plumas Museum
