1939 marked the inaugural year of the Smokejumping program. The U.S. Forest Service built a team of experts in flight, forestry, and fire fighting. Their task w...as to train a few brave men to test the gear required to defy the open skies and the rugged terrain of the American wildlands. In the beginning, men wore any number of work boots and jump boots available. Over the next few years, White’s would emerge as the de facto standard for any man who could afford to buy one. There was nothing like the logging boot Otto White and his bootmakers were making at that time. Every detail of the boot was focused on reliability, durability, safety, and comfortall important factors in helping smokejumpers perform the rigors of fire fighting, regardless of the conditions met. Out of necessity, the Smokejumper boot was born, and fortunately, Otto White had been perfecting something like it since he started making boots in the 1890s. By 1939, he was in the right place at the right time and ever since that day smokejumpers have been wearing some version of the original Smokejumper. That’s 82 years and counting.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze. No one was injured during this incident and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. See more
