Sierra Nets

One of the questions I get the most, aside from what finish I use, is where do I get all my amazing woods. Well, here's a perfect example. On my way home from fishing today, I stopped by the studio of fellow artist and good friend, @750maxfactory. This place is a menagerie of things old and new for the eyes to feast upon. I was a kid in a candy store! He's always working on interesting things and collects many different objects including serving trays. A friend of his knew... of his fondness for them & traded this tray for a small display cabinet. Knowing that he had something I'd like, he generously decided to share it with me. Now, there might have been a hint of making a new net for him thrown in, I'm not sure . I was happy to oblige because this is rare and stunning Juniper burl. It's a big 3/8" thick slab at that! Created these 3 custom spinning rod reel seats for @socaltroutcartel . Hand-engraved trout & star inlaid with black stone and red epoxy. These are stabilized museum-grade buckeye burl seats. At .71" OD D 1.5" (exposed portion) length, there wasn't a lot of real estate, so you gotta make it count! Yesterday evening with @glenn_uedawe were back at it after a 3 week hiatus. As always, more laughs than fish but we got ours! The first pic was taken seconds after I tried to trap my falling rod with my cheek, and I planted the nose of the fish squarely (and slimily sp? ) up mine! The takes were vicious at times and subtle at others. Two notable moments of the evening :a peregrine falcon flew over us at the launch ramp. For the first time ever, we were harassed by a sea lion at the wall. He grabbed a calico I caught but I was able to wrestle it away. He did get one fish we released as he hung out under the boat for 30 minutes. Bioluminesence made the underwater attacks even creepier.

I love the community of makers here on IG. Did reciprocal shop tours this week with @wilee_woodworks and it was super cool to trade woodworking ideas and see how he gets along in his home workshop. We first met when he bought a piece of african padauk wood from me a year or 2 ago. He even gifted me a beautiful chunk of desert ironwood that I'm looking forward to turning into reel seats. Got lucky! Lucky that my ol' buddy @fortunate_one_13 was able to fish while visiting his neck of the woods. Lucky that we had rare windless conditions and glassy calm waters all day with 40' H2O visibility. Lucky to have visited a cove chuck full of cruising large smallmouth bass, carp, stripers, and enormous catfish. All could be seen swimming 15+ feet beneath our boat in the aquarium-like waters of Lake Mojave. Lucky that, with the occasional random boil, I cast to one that was within my reach. Lucky that, several strips later, this 8lber came tight and a fun battle ensued. An amazingly fun day at the island with Captain @glenn_ueda . Catalina has a special place in my heart with its wild craggy shorelines dropping into the clear blue Pacific. Patches of kelp and underwater fish-holding structures dot the shore where depths can be 100' just yards away from shore. It's like another world yet so close (39 miles) from the hustle & bustle of LA. Always a privilege to be on the water catching rod-throbbing Bonita, many on top water.
