WHAT: Table read for TWO new plays, GARDEL and ROMEO & JULIEN! ** Hello, We are looking for some actors to help us with a table read of 2 new plays.... GARDEL is a play with music and choreography; based on the life, music, and love of Carlos Gardel: one of the most recorded musicians in the world and the father of the modern tango. Gardel died tragically and mysteriously in a plane crash at age 45, at the height of his career. Play was written by Kevin Michael Smith (PRIDE). Joining us via Skype will be award-winning theatre director, Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj whom the NY Times calls, "one of the most talented" directors of our time. Rajendra begins teaching at Yale University this fall. More on him here: http://www.rajendramaharaj.com/ & ROMEO & JULIEN is a modern, surprising take on the Shakespearean classic. Romeo is Latino and is in love with Julien who is Korean. Their fathers are rivals, running for political office in the fictionalized town of "Verona, California." Written by J. Lane Ross. ** note on each: the ethnicities of each character in both pieces do not need to reflect the ethnic background of the reader. The purpose of the read is to hear these new plays aloud and we, the producers and writers, thank you in advance for lending your amazing talents for that purpose. Both writers will be in attendance. WHEN: SUNDAY, DECEMBER 3rd (total run time from 11 AM to 530 PM) * GARDEL read runs from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM * break for lunch (provided) between 1:30 and 2:30 PM * ROMEO read runs from 2:30 PM to approximately 5:00 PM WHERE: Sidewalk Studio Theatre in Burbank 4150 W. Riverside Dr. Suite D Burbank, CA 91505 Corner of Evergreen, 2 doors down from Priscilla's Coffee shop We also need someone to read the stage directions for both plays. CASTING NOTES: PLEASE READ the attached for character breakdown and role descriptions for each play. IF ANYONE wishes to read parts in both plays, you are welcome to do so. Otherwise, kindly specify which play and which role(s) you are submitting for. As you will see, we need about a dozen actors/actresses for each play. Note the start and end times for the play you are submitting for (if only one). Please RSVP your availability ASAP to: [email protected] Thanks much for your consideration. Best, Kurt Swanson and Justin Ross
A reading of The Pride. Well done.
RELENTLESS RELENTLESS RELENTLESS RELENTLESS Please help. These are my students. Watch them and vote for them if you think they earned it. They produced, directed, shot, edited and performed it themselves. A true David vs Goliath. We are a campus of 150. Ball State has 22,000. HELP! http://redbullbracketreel.com/dance-2016/video/144

The Company Theatre, was an inspiration for the founding of Scorpio Rising Theatre. Scorpio was originally a storefront poorest of the poor non union ensemble theatre 1969 - 1980's evolving into an Equity Waiver 99 seat plan theatre ( much less than 99) Most Theatres in LA were actor showcase theatres. Scorpio was an early recipient of LA DRAMA CRITICS CIRCLE SPECIAL MARGARET HARTFORD AWARD "for the intensity of your focus on new work by new playwrights and contemporary theat...re". NEA,CAC, OADR grants, and others allowed us to pay minimum stipends to actors before the plan. With the largest CETA grant to train theatre artists, musicians, dancers, visual arts, more minimum wage or more. Unheard of in a small storefront theatre. SRT was indebted to Company Theatre visionaries like Barry Opper, Steven Kent , William Dennis Hunt , Dennis Rhoton ( Redfield ), and so many more. Also, Ron Sossi and The Odyssey Theatre 1969 - current, Sal Romeo and The Burbage Theatre all creating real theatre in Los Angeles, along with some other unique Theatres. Part of the reason for the LA Equity 99 Seat Waiver Plan was to allow Equity actors to participate in this concept of quality small theatre and make sure they weren't exploited. Guy Zimmerman has made a strong argument on Bitter Lemons, that the current LA Equity 99 Seat Waiver Plan, that it does not limit producers or theatre company's to pay actors higher than the plan's minimum stipends. And artist driven collective theatre has always been in a struggle with Equity. There is a current debate at Colin Mitchell Bitter Lemons and the Big Cheap Theatre Yahoo Group, and is important to understand that there would not be the quantity of LA small theatre productions without it. In 1969 few small Theatres were creating original ensemble theatre, world premieres, west coast premieres, or LA premiere's of new plays. Few playwrights workshops, or playwrights in residence from across the country had actual new plays performed in new theatre. The landscape has changed. I would be embarrassed to say how small Scorpio Rising Theatre's annual budget was. See more
