Getting Individual Medical Ins after open enrollment. If you didn't get insured during Open Enrollment, you can only get an Individual Plan now if you have a "Qualifying Event". This means you can enroll or change your health plan outside the open enrollment period. Most special enrollment periods last 60 days from the date of the qualifying life event. Qualifying life events that create a special enrollment period include: Getting married Gaining a dependent or becomi...ng a dependent through marriage, birth, adoption, or placement for adoption Permanently moving to a new area that has different health plan options Losing other healthcare coverage that is considered minimum essential coverage (Note: Voluntarily quitting other health coverage or being terminated for not paying your premiums are not considered a qualifying event.) A change in income that would affect an enrollee's eligibility for financial assistance Becoming a U.S. citizen As a result of an error, misrepresentation, or inaction by a QHP or agent See more

I had a client ask about getting an Auto Insurance quote. As it turns out the client has a truck which is used for business. He has been insuring it under his personal auto. That is not how to do it. He is at risk for an uncovered claim. If a 3/4 ton pick up truck loaded with materials gets into an accident, it can result in significant damages to both people and property. Do not let this happen to you. Commercial Auto is a little more expensive but it is that way for a reason. Generally the liability limits are much higher than you would find in personal auto.

Individual Medical Coverage Enrollment Deadline,,, April 15? If you are late to the party and didn't get signed up by March 31, there is hope. Some insurers are accepting applications until midnight on April 15th, 2014. To be clear, the primary reason for medical insurance is to pay for the care that would save your life or avoid financial ruin. Beyond that, it smooths out costs for common items like office visits, labwork, and MRI's. Many people are upset about the high... cost of "insurance" and see the insurance companies as gougers. The fact is that the Gov't has mandated how much the insurers must pay out in claims. 80 cents of every dollar must be paid out in claims. What would your business look like if you had to cover your operations and profits on 20%? Bottom Line- the cost of insurance is a reflection of the cost of care. Imagine the shock of discovering the pain in your side is an ailment requiring treatments at $5,000/mo? Would you get the care you need? Would you keep your house? See more

Medicare can't pay for everything. That is not the role of insurance. However, they are extending coverage here. Watch for other take aways in the future from a system whose cost has the capacity to bankrupt us due to plain old demographics.

What is Open Enrollment and why does it exist? You have probably heard of Open Enrollment (OE) and know that it has something to do with medical insurance. OE is the time of year when you can make changes to your medical insurance. It used to only apply to employer sponsored group plans and to Medicare (seniors). Now with healthcare reform it applies to individual plans too. If you aren't covered, OE is the time you can "enroll" into coverage. If you want to add a depe...ndent, OE is the time. If you want to change your plan,,, you guessed it, OE. There are exceptions called "Qualifying Events". If you have a baby, of course you can add the child. It is the same if you marry, adopt, or lose other coverage for whatever reason. You have 30 days under a group plan and 60 for individual. Why? The reason relates to the basic principle of insurance- if you have lots of people paying a small amount, they can cover all the huge expenses of the entire group. To do that you need lots of people joining the pool and staying in. If you were uninsured and there was no restriction on when you could sign up, what is to keep you from enrolling the day before you need surgery? Insurance is regulated by the State and Federal governments. They system we have is a balance of consumer and industry protections. See more

Open Enrollment ends March 31. If you don't get your medical insurance through work, you will have to get it during Open Enrollment. After OE closes, you will not be able to get individual coverage without a qualifying event (like losing your group coverage). OE comes around every year now in the Fall for a Jan 1 effective date.
