Today we have something a little different for our Volunteer Spotlight. We wanted to share a success story regarding our volunteers in our Literacy program! The library's Literacy staff is celebrating learner John B., who recently finished reading his first book by himself! His tutor, Barbara, helps him practice sight words and focus on comprehension. John often reads aloud during their weekly study sessions, "but this time, he just kept going and going!" Barbara said. ... At the library's Shasta Literacy program, our volunteer tutors help learners of all levels, whether they need basic reading and writing skills, must pass a workplace test, or dream of gaining their diploma. If you know someone who can benefit, or you'd like to volunteer, call Shasta Literacy at (530) 245-7237. #literacy #literacymatters #shastaliteracyprogram #volunteer #shastapubliclibraries #tutoring #learning #education

Happy Staff Pick Saturday! Today's pick comes from Sara, our Education Services Librarian! She recommends "Children of Blood and Bone" by Tomi Adeyemi. This book is the first in a planned trilogy and follows Zélie Adebola as she learns about her own history of magic. Zélie strives to bring back magic in order to go against the ruling class to restore magic to the kingdom of Orïsha. ... Sara says, "My favorite thing about this book is the level of layers Adeyemi has created. Of course, you have this social struggle between the non-magic users and the very oppressed maji. The whole struggle is so relevant, but told in such a compelling way. Zélie is such a strong female character and is someone to look up to, even though she makes mistakes and is imperfect. It makes the story very human and relatable." Have you read this book? Let us know what you thought! #staffpicks #staffpicksaturday #libraries #publiclibrary #toberead #toread #childrenofbloodandbone #cobab #tomiadeyemi #bookrecommendations #bookrecommendation

A huge thank you to one of our volunteer tutors, Barbara! Barbara has been volunteering with our Literacy program for about 6 years. She helps tutor those with dyslexia, which she finds personal satisfaction in since she's dyslexic herself. She's seen how methods of teaching have changed over the years and she has the opportunity to help others learn to read. The tutoring program is geared to help others without having to be a teacher and she just loves being able to help peo...ple. Barbara said she enjoys seeing her students' delight when they reach a new level of skill. As a voracious reader herself, she said the biggest reward is seeing them get to enjoy books for pleasure and work their way up to novels! We appreciate her dedication to helping others in our community. Thank you Barbara! If you are as inspired by Barbara as we are and are interested in becoming a tutor with the Shasta Literacy Program, call (530) 245-7237 or visit http://ow.ly/vo6R50BDLfA #literacy #literacymatters #shastaliteracyprogram #volunteer #shastapubliclibraries #tutoring #learning #education
