Picturesque Shasta County, located at the northern end of California's Sacramento Valley, is known for its colorful history, abundant natural beauty, and unlimited recreational opportunities. First home to native tribes such as the Wintu and Yana, Shasta County was officially established in 1850, and fur trappers, cattle ranchers, and miners, lumber mills, copper smelters, and railroads soon made their indelible mark on the landscape. The region's story continued to unfold th...roughout the 20th century as its many lakes, parks, rivers, and the snow-capped peak of Mt. Shasta welcomed and enticed many to make Shasta County home. When you look out over beautiful Shasta Lake do you ever wonder what lies below the surface? Will you be surprised to learn there’s history in the deep? Once a thriving copper mining town, Kennett became a casualty of the dam. It has been said that most landowners sold their property to the government willingly, while others waited until the waters began to rise before abandoning their homes. In any case the reduced population of the town was likely considered too inconsequential to stand in the way of progress. Kennett was completely submerged by 1944, one year before the completion of the dam. Did you or any of your family live or mine at Kennett? Share your pictures and family lore in the comments.

SNAPSHOT IN TIME: Two unidentified members of the Newtown Baseball Club poses for a photograph in complete uniform. Baseball was widely played county wide against different communities in the same county, and it was some times referred to as Town Ball. Often teams of nine or more players played the game for nine innings or until a winner was determined in extra innings. Newtown was originally a gold rush community in Shasta County, which was located one mile north of Buckeye. Today, Newtown Road and the Newtown Cemetery off Ironhorse Road retains its name. #SnapshotInTime #ShastaHistory #ShastaCounty #Throwback

Hello, this is the new history video by me, Jay. Please join me as I act as your tour guild for a virtual tour of one of the Society’s exhibits that is not available to view in person because of the Society building being closed to the public, due to the pandemic and the current restrictive Red tier Shasta County is in. With the presidential election finally coming up, I thought it would be apropos to check out the President John F. Kennedy exhibit of his historic visit to Sh...asta County to dedicate the Whiskeytown Dam completion. Visitors to the building are really being missed because we have super visitors. People from around the USA and the world, from all walks of life, researchers, history lovers, genealogists, historians and just the curious, who oftentimes I learn as much from as they do from their time spent here. In reviewing the video, I noticed I got the amount of time since the event wrong, missed by a decade should be 57 years since the event not 47. Hope you enjoy the tour. Let us know. Thanks, Jay. Historic recurrence is the repetition of similar events in history. ... take for instance glamping, a new term for an old experience. Glamping, where nature meets luxury, came about as solitude seeking adventurers, having purchased the newly introduced automobile, started a craze in a new kind of camping, the auto camp. Drivers, now with the ease of individual travel, sought out places to recreate they had not seen before. In response, auto camps with cabins or tents and... designed for the accommodation of automobile tourists, sprung up around the nation. At Middlecreek Road and Benton Drive there was once Diestelhorst Auto Camp. It is long gone now, but in these undated black and white postcard scans, you can see a line of covered areas under which cars could park, adjoined by small cabins. These were lined up along the shoreline of the Sacramento River. Nearby, the arched Diestelhorst Bridge crossed the river where a ferry once operated. What is your favorite place to camp in Shasta County? Are you a tent camper, or a glamper? Share your camping/glamping photos! See more

SNAPSHOT IN TIME: This is a badly scratched up, damaged image of East Center Street in Anderson, Shasta County, California. Our estimate is that it is circa 1915, at best, and in the photograph is the Anderson Depot on the left side of the street and on the right side is a grocery store, a second hand store, and the Oriental Hotel. An early day bicycle is seen on the right side of the street. #SnapshotInTime #ShastaHistory #ShastaCounty #Throwback

THE CASE OF MISSING HISTORICAL MARKER No.519 Originally located at the Southwest corner of the intersection of Clear Creek Rd. and Hwy 273 ( old hwy. 99 at the time of installation) on the eastside of Westside road. Across the street from the building that was a tavern for years, and now Design Time countertop store, there is a bus stop sign there now. The concrete stand for the monument is gone and because of that I don’t think it was vandalism. I do believe it was remove...d by the authority of either Cal Trans or the City of Redding when the area became a bus stop and the marker was in the way of busses pulling in. The photo below of the empty mount for the sign was taken in 2001, so it has been close to 20 years since it was removed. I found an old photo of the sign here at the Society library, posted below. The sign was not relocated and over the years I have heard it is in a Cal Trans worker’s garage or possibly languishing in one of the State, City or County agency’s corporate yard. Any information of the markers current whereabouts would be appreciated . Thanks, Jay See more
