On January 20, President Biden issued an Executive Order emphasizing a commitment to improve public health and protect our environment; to ensure access to cle...an air and water; to limit exposure to dangerous chemicals and pesticides; to hold polluters accountable, including those who disproportionately harm communities of color and low-income communities . . . The President has directed all executive departments and agencies to take action consistent with his order. This directive is important not only because of what it says, but because of how swiftly it was issued. Political observers are always keenly interested in the first 100 days of a new Administration, because this early period reflects the priorities of the new President. Marginalized communities did not have to wait 100 days to see how President Biden views them. He signed the Order on his first day in office. The KRRC project is completely consistent with President Biden’s Executive Order. Removing the Klamath dams improves public health by eliminating reservoirs that foster massive blooms of toxic blue-green algae. Dam removal helps reverse decades of devastating environmental, cultural and economic impacts to Tribal and low-income communities that have disproportionately suffered from the numerous negative impacts of dams. Dam removal reopens more than 400 miles of historic habitat for salmon and steelhead, which can revitalize tribal, recreational and commercial fishing operations for Northern California and Southern Oregon communities. KRRC looks forward to implementing a project that supports several goals embodied in this important Order.

Today, #NACD submitted public comments to NRCS regarding guidance for identification of nonindustrial private forest land (NIPF). For more than 75 years, cons...ervation districts have been leaders in locally-led efforts by engaging private landowners to partake in voluntary conservation practices on the ground, NACD President Tim Palmer said. Conservation districts across the country have worked with forest landowners and have not previously raised concerns with the definition of non-industrial private forest land (NIPF). Excitement in Scott Valley! Over the next week, the Scott River Watershed Council will be conducting a demonstration project up Patterson Creek (Etna) on a lar...ge fuel break being constructed on EFM land that will run clear behind the City of Etna and into Ruffy Gap (similar work will be done in Quartz Valley behind the Quartz Valley Indian Reservation). Large amounts of wood will be used to create biochar using innovative large scale and efficient carbonator technology. The project will create value-added biochar which will be provided to local agricultural producers, Hanna Brothers Ranch, Rockside Ranch, French Creek Ranch, Scott River Ranch and Harris Heritage Farms, as a soil amendment. The production of biochar will be evaluated for economic feasibility, quality, scale, and market demand. These types of collaborative projects are making a different in our community and we hope the lessons learned can collectively help us create a healthy, sustainable future together. A huge thank you to our project manager, Alexis Robertson, EFM (landowner), the Quartz Valley Indian Reservation, Jefferson Resource Company, Pat Johnson Logging, Falk Forestry, Sonoma Ecology Center, North Coast Resource Partnership, Cal FIRE and California Climate Investments.
