The three-week syllabus contains daily educational readings, p...odcasts, and videos to reflect on. This daily challenge runs from August 12 September 1. Each day's assignment will take just 15-30 minutes. The goal are to develop social justice habits by heightening awareness and understanding of the critical lack of racial equity in our country, and to help accelerate creating and implementing solutions. The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a request from a church in Nevada to block enforcement of state restrictions on attendance at religious services. The vote was 5 to 4, with Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. joining the court’s four more liberal members to form a majority.

The oral arguments centered around whether the Creek Nation ever had a reservation and, if so, if it was ever disestablished. Federal Indian reservations are usually exempt from state jurisdiction since Native American tribes have the right to govern their own internal affairs. The Constitution gives the federal government, not state governments, the authority to deal with tribes as governments.

In our judicial system, ‘the public has a right to every man’s evidence.’ Since the earliest days of the Republic, ‘every man’ has included the President of the United States, Roberts wrote in the New York case. . . . Congress and the Presidentthe two political branches established by the Constitutionhave an ongoing relationship that the Framers intended to feature both rivalry and reciprocity, Roberts wrote.

Six justices agreed that by allowing debt collection calls to cellphones Congress impermissibly favored debt-collection speech over political and other speech, in violation of the First Amendment," Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote. And seven justices agreed that the 2015 exception should be stricken from the law.

"Justice Elena Kagan wrote for the court that a state may instruct electors that they have no ground for reversing the vote of millions of its citizens. That direction accords with the Constitution as well as with the trust of a Nation that here, We the People rule."

On that day Major General Gordon Granger was in Galveston TX, the largest city in Texas at that time, and announced General Order 3: "The People of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, 'all slaves are free.' This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves." WASHINGTON In a striking rebuke to President Trump, the Supreme Court Thursday rejected his plan to repeal the popular Obama-era order that protected so-called Dreamers, the nearly 800,000 young immigrants who were brought to this country illegaly as children.

The court rejected a total of 10 different cases that had piled up at the court in recent months. Two justices, conservatives Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh, said they would have heard one of the cases, a dispute from New Jersey over that state’s concealed carry gun permits.

WASHINGTON The Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear the Trump administration’s challenge to a California sanctuary law, leaving intact rules that prohibit law enforcement officials from aiding federal agents in taking custody of immigrants as they are released from jail.

In decisions on two separate cases, the court said Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which makes it illegal for employers to discriminate because of a person's sex, among other factors, also covers sexual orientation and transgender status. It upheld rulings from lower courts that said discrimination based on those factors was a form of sex discrimination.
