Let’s talk about night guards! Many patients present with signs of grinding/clenching their teeth - could be excessive wear marks on their teeth or TMJ (jaw) discomfort. The first line defense when I see this is to make a custom fitted night guard. We have a few different options for our patients. 1. Hard/Soft Dual Layer - this is the traditional style night guard. There are two layers: on outer BPA-free hard plastic and an inner soft pliable comfortable layer. It is the th...ickest, but also most protective layer 2. Thin Retainer-style - these are traditionally used as a retainer after braces, but can also serve as a guard for those patients who can’t tolerate the thicker traditional guards 3. Anterior Deprogrammer - these types of guards cover only the front teeth so that the back teeth do not touch. We had a patient present to my office after seeing a large chain HMO/Dentical dental office. They ended extracted her tooth holding her existing bridge, removed the entire bridge and let her leave the office without any temporary (came in exactly as the top photo shows). She was understandably upset and crying. We re-prepared her teeth for new crowns and bridges and walked out the same day with beautiful temporary bridge, crowns, and a smile :)
