At Seton Medical Center, nursing leadership awarded two extraordinary nurses the DAISY Award at a surprise presentation during Nurses Week: Sarah Barty, RN, Ambulatory Surgery "She took on a role that protects nurses and staff in the hospital, who have no immunity to the Novel Coronavirus. She accepted the challenge of teaching nurses and other staff how to properly utilize Personal Protective Equipment. Her ability to properly teach people throughout the organization how to... utilize PPE could possibly be described as a lifesaver for those who might have otherwise been vulnerable to the potent virus. She alleviated fear of the staff and made it her personal mission to educate and support nurses, so they could do the same with their patients. Her approachability creates an environment of calm and trust. She takes her knowledge and action based learning to the floors, where staff value and appreciate her. Her ability to use evidence based research in her teaching has preserved valuable resources and maintained the safety of our staff and patients. She embraces all that is good about nursing as a well informed, collaborative, and caring individual. Note: First of two posts.

At Seton Medical Center, nursing leadership awarded two extraordinary nurses the DAISY Award at a surprise presentation during Nurses Week: Bernadette Murphy, RN, Administrative Nursing Supervisor She will say that she is doing what is expected. The reality is that she goes above and beyond the role of a caring and compassionate nurse and leader. She cares very deeply that nurses feel satisfied in their roles. ... Most recently, she delivered food to the various departments, and she made a special point of honoring those that provide care, as well as those that support care. She truly understands the value of the whole team. She finds moments to teach, moments to listen and moments to act. She provides comfort to staff and patients. In an environment where visitors are not allowed, to prevent the spread of infection, she, at times, must fill that void. It is difficult for staff, and difficult for patients. She lends a listening ear and an open heart, as she demonstrates her compassion. In emergency situations, she is calm and present. Note: Second of two posts.

At Seton Medical Center, our nutrition and food services staff were recently recognized by a visitor who was here when our elevators were under repair one evening: Dear Mr Jackson, I visited Seton Daly City this afternoon and the elevators were out. As I walked down from the 9th floor I noticed the dietary staff, and possibly others, bringing up trays of food in bucket brigade fashion, one tray at a time. One person would run it up the stairs from the first floor to the sec...ond and hand it off to the next person, all the way up to the 9th floor. I don't think any of the residents were aware of how much effort went into getting them their dinner, but I noticed extraordinary effort by a pretty amazing staff. I hope that they feel the appreciation somehow. Sincerely, Kirsten Irgens-Moller Ombudsman Seton Medical Center and Seton Coastside staff, physicians and volunteers are the heart and soul of caring for our community's patients.
