City Manager to Club Sunday, August 23, 2020 For the Program last Tuesday we were joined by our Selma City Manager, Teresa Gallavan. She gave us the latest rundown on what is happening around our town.... With every Zoom meeting I feel we are getting better and better at it. This week we had 16 in attendance. Thank you to all who were able to attend. We will be dark this week, with our next scheduled Rotary meeting on September 01. Be on the look out for your invitation later this week. One of the first areas of focus (to use a Rotary term) Teresa touched on was a new Active Transportation Plan for the city that is now in the planning phase. The city is in the process of actively pursuing grant funding for this and was also soliciting community feedback for the new plan. Teresa had a video for us to check out and also a citizen's survey to help with the input. They are also working on a full redesign of our www.cityof selma.com website. Public comments are now being collected. Www.developselma.com is the place to go to view and submit comments. For COVID-19, we are in the midst of our "Cover-up to Open-up" campaign for local businesses. There are also neighborhood walks going on distributing COVID-19 care packages. Senior meals are also being provided and most businesses have undergone modifications to open up safely with some of them having to use sidewalks, parking lots and parks. For the 20-21 budget, priorities will be providing for public safety and city development. They will also be developing a Capital Improvement Plan. The grand opening for the new police station is scheduled for sometime this fall. Many of us have yet to meet Chief Gomez as he was hired right about the time COVID-19 hit. The Chief has put more officers on patrol at any given time and the many homeless encampments around town are beginning to be addressed, where they are on city or private property. The camps that are on state property have to be dealt with through the governor's office. When permission is granted, Cal Trans can then clean them up too. For the Fire Department the plans are in the works for a new ambulance, a new ladder truck and the formation of strike teams. There are many projects in the works regarding community development and of course we have an election coming up for our four city districts and a mayor-at-large. On the ballot too, will be if citizens want to continue with having a mayor-at-large. Many thanks to Teresa for taking the time to fill us in on city doings. Appreciate it very much.
