This past weekend we got our continuing education groove on. Kristy spent the weekend at a scoliosis workshop in Santa Clarita with Karena Thek while Natt and I went to the ‘Stand and Deliver’ workshop taught by Cara Reeser and Jeremy Laverdure. We’ll be honest - we really hate putting out bad news about our wildlife population over and over again but this basically serves to highlight the challenges ou...r local mountain lions face in the region. So yeah, you guessed it. We have some sad news to report. We recently found two dead collared mountain lions in the Santa Monica Mountains. For P-30, an otherwise healthy six-year-old male, the cause of death is anticoagulant rodenticide. For P-53, a four-year-old female, the cause of death is unknown, but four different compounds of rat poison were found in her liver. P-30 is the fifth mountain lion in our long-term study of the species to die this way. Anticoagulant rodenticides, although intended to control rats, can end up negatively impacting a wide range of wildlife - from the bottom of the food chain to the top. Since 2002, National Park Service researchers have documented the presence of anticoagulant rodenticide compounds in 23 out of 24 local mountain lions, including in a three-month-old kitten. P-30 was re-captured in February 2018 and given a new GPS collar. He is one of the more notable mountain lions of the study because he was the first male lion kitten to have been marked at the den and then to have survived long enough in the Santa Monica Mountains to reach adulthood and establish a home range. Two other mountain lions were killed over the summer - P-38 and P-61. In terms of human mortality causes, vehicle strikes are the most common, followed by anticoagulant poisoning. Intraspecific conflict (lions killing other lions) has also been an important cause of mortality. This conflict is a natural cause of death but it is potentially more common because of the isolation caused by freeways and development. Biologists call this frustrated dispersal. P-61 was killed while trying to cross the 405 Freeway right after (or during) an intraspecific conflict, and P-38 was illegally shot in the head. To learn more, read our press release here: https://www.nps.gov//two-mountain-lions-found-found-dead-i . Also, we encourage you to check out P-22 Day at Griffith Park on October 19 from 11 to 4 pm. Pic 1 is of P-30 in February 2018, pic 2 is P-30 deceased and pic 3 is P-53 deceased. -Ranger Ana Beatriz

This weekend, after months of training, I climbed Mt. Whitney. It was a beautiful, fun, and challenging couple of days, including an 11-mile acclimatization hik...e on Sunday, then heading up Whitney at 1am and ending at 5:30pm Monday. Although the altitude turned Dave and me back at Trail Crest at 13,550 feet (just a mile and a half from the summit), I feel so accomplished taking this on. The support and encouragement from my dear friends on the hike made this possible - thank you Lisa Digger, Jason Songhurst, Jeff Winikow, Corinna HappyTrails, and my adventure partner Dave Moorman. I am thankful for all my Pilates training that enabled me to do this with two hip replacements and a bone-on-bone knee, and no back pain even though I carried a heavy backpack for over 17 hours! Can’t wait for the next adventure. See more
