Abraham was the role model of leadership as Judaism understands it. He took responsibility. He acted; he did not wait for others to act. To Abraham, God says ‘Walk before me’, meaning: be a leader. Walk ahead. Take personal responsibility. Take moral responsibility. Take collective responsibility. Judaism is God’s call to responsibility. These words of wisdom were written by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks in Lessons in Leadership, about Parashat Vayera, the same parasha from this ...past Shabbat morning, when he passed away. When I read what he wrote about Abraham, I feel it was also about Rabbi Sacks. Nobody told him to become the great leader, philosopher, thinker and role model he was for so many of us. In his own words, he walked ahead. He took responsibility- personal, moral and collective. Rest In Peace, dear Rabbi, you left us too soon, and you leave behind a gigantic legacy of leadership and wisdom. While the world gets all excited about peace and rapprochement between Israel and the Arab world, an act of Palestinian terrorism made sure today that the Ohayon family will never again have their husband and father in their lives. As long as there is no change in the Palestinian textbooks and classrooms, or in the violent sermons in mosques, Israelis will not know any real peace.
