Please join SDVLP for a Zoom webinar training for attorneys looking to volunteer virtually at our Domestic Violence Restraining Order Clinics. Two SDVLP staff attorneys will provide an overview of substantive DV laws, interviewing techniques for working with clients who have experienced abuse and trauma, and instructions on how to write declarations and provide our clients with legal advice in restraining order cases. , @.. ' , .. . SDVLP recently helped a foster child, who was born abroad to U.S. citizen-parents, to obtain U.S. citizenship. As the child of U.S. citizens, he qualified for legal status, but his parents struggled to properly care for him, and failed to complete the necessary paperwork. The child's parents also failed to obtain a birth c...ertificate for the child, and he later entered foster care with no identification. Thankfully, volunteer attorney John Edson, and his legal assistant, Nicole Lautzenheizer, of Sheppard Mullin, stepped up to assist this child. John and Nicole worked very hard to gather the evidence necessary to support the child's application for a certificate of citizenship. The process was long and difficult, but John and Nicole never gave up on the child. Over a year later, the child was officially granted U.S. citizenship, and is on a path to a brighter future. ' , . SDVLP recently helped a sole proprietor whose bathtub repair business was devastated by the pandemic. His business had come to a standstill, and his applications for federal government loan assistance had been denied. He reached out to SDVLP's COVID-19 Small Business Brief Legal Advice Clinic for help with understan...ding available loan and grant programs that could help him preserve his livelihood during these challenging times. Bradley Birchfield, of Cooley LLP, volunteered to help this client, counseling him about additional grant and loan programs provided by federal, state, and local governments. Brad advised our client about the requirements of each program, and the specific application procedures. Thanks to Brad, this client secured the funding necessary to keep his business afloat.
