We lost a great friend to the SDSU MFA Musical Theatre Program. Dear Kathie Ross passed away in her sleep last night. She was always there to help out our students with unyielding support and sandwiches. We will miss you terribly. Here's a picture of Kathie with 2020 MFA graduate Devon Hunt.
An article on the concept and rehearsal process for Pippin.
I can't help but think how happy Dude Stephenson would be if the new Program Director - Musical Theatre at Interlochen was an SDSU graduate. If you are interested in this amazing opportunity you should apply! https://interlochen.submit4jobs.com/index.cfm

Today was the first day of work on the reading of Postcard American Town as part of the New Musicals Initiative at SDSU. The eight MFAs along with seven undergrads are working all week with writers Lynne Shankel and Crystal Skillman via Zoom. Following safety precautions, everyone is wearing masks, socially distancing, and some of the cast is even rehearsing remotely from home. This exciting new musical will be worked on over the next two years culminating in a fully staged production. Check back in next week to meet the eight MFAs who make up the Class of 2022!

Please take a moment to watch this powerful video that was shared at the SDSU Teach-In to support Black Students this morning. Black Lives Matter. Black Minds Matter. https://youtu.be/NRGMRFU-JDU
We echo the words of our President Adela de la Torre: "The deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor remind us of an undeniable truth: Racism is alive and well in our country...we must each condemn the systemic racism that both enables and protects these vile acts of violence and disregard for human life. We must do better and be better, and we will." We condemn these acts and are committed to doing the work in our field to fight racism and educating ourselv...es and our students to help change systemic racism in the musical theatre. Below is just a start and we ask our students, alums, and friends to join us and take action. Action Items: Assist in Creating a Welcoming and Safe Climate for SDSU's African-American Community https://diversity.sdsu.edu/initiatives/pledge Donate to the Black Resource Center. https://securelb.imodules.com/s/997/campaign13/index.aspx Review the shareable resource guide on how to be an upstander. https://diversity.sdsu.edu/initiatives/upstanders Support developing course assignments relevant to African-American experience, history, culture, and / or well-being. https://diversity.sdsu.edu/initiatives/course-assignment Read recommended books or articles on structural inequality. https://diversity.sdsu.edu/initiatives/reading A full list of resources: https://diversity.sdsu.edu//resources_response_racial_viol
"Mere words without action are futile. Know that decisive steps to heal our community and right the wrongs against our Black community members, and our communities of color, will continue and increase. I urge each of you to live through love. It is the first step to counter unacceptable, and equally painful, forms of racial bias and violence within our community. In closing, I turn to those who have been hurt, violated, or also denied an opportunity because of your name, your... identity or skin color, who have endured unnecessary harassment and humiliation while in public spaces, and who have been told to return to a country in which you have never lived. These hate-motivated acts are not normal. They are not your fault. They are not acceptable." Adela de la Torre, Ph.D. President San Diego State University
"So please, take a moment to connect with one another, to embrace our shared humanity and to remind ourselves why the work we do is integral to a better world." J. Luke Wood
