Just released, a new book "Pulp Vietnam: War and Gender in Cold War Men's Adventure Magazines" by Gregory Daddis, professor, center for war and society; director, and USS Midway chair in modern U.S. military history. In this compelling evaluation of Cold War popular culture, "Pulp Vietnam" explores how men's adventure magazines helped shape the attitudes of young, working-class Americans, the same men who fought and served in the long and bitter war in Vietnam. Anthropology 583 is one of the methods courses offered by the SDSU Department of Anthropology. Lab classes are an integral part of training archaeology students for careers in cultural resource management, museum curation, and education, but in a semester of mostly virtual classrooms, adjustments were needed and professors have gone above and beyond the call to provide students with quality educational experiences. INVITATION: Join us for a virtual screening of "Singing Our Way To Freedom" a documentary about Ramon "Chunky" Sanchez. Wednesday, Oct. 28 | 6:30 p.m. ... The virtual screening is followed by a Q&A with a panel including the director. This documentary is about SDSU alumnus, activist, and musician, Ramon Chunky Sanchez. While a student at SDSU, Sanchez joined hundreds of barrio residents to protest plans to use a small plot of land under the San Diego - Coronado bridge for a highway patrol station. Instead, the movement convinced the city to turn the plot into Chicano Park. As a musician, Sanchez was often invited by Cesar Chavez to play at the United Farm Workers union rallies. In 2016, the NEA bestowed upon him a National Heritage Fellowship, the country’s highest honor in folk and traditional arts. Ancient History / Archaeology Lecture: Feeding the Mines, Feeding the Cities: Urbanizing Beekeeping and Pork Butchery in Hispania Tarraconiensis Friday, Oct. 23 at 7:15 p.m. Zoom ID: 814 4922 9189 (Passcode: dig2020)... Join us for this free and open to the public virtual lecture by Dr. David Wallace-Hare (SDSU) and Katie Tardio (UNC-Chapel Hill). Two case studies reveal hitherto little-known urban manifestations of two rural industries in Roman Spain, beekeeping and pork production, in two important cities in Hispania Tarraconensis: Segobriga and Tarraco. The paper first argues that the concentration of ceramic beehives in villas in Segobriga’s hinterland, a zone focused on the mining of lapis specularis, is a byproduct of Segobriga’s mining operations. Secondly, the paper discusses preliminary zooarchaeological investigations into Tarraco’s lower city that have revealed evidence of pork butchery, forcing a reconsideration of pork processing logistics in other Roman cities and their hinterlands. This free, open-to-the-public event is co-sponsored by the SDSU Department of History and the San Diego Society of the AIA.

What is left of American Democracy on the eve of the 2020 elections? As the Presidential elections approach, there are troubling signs that American democracy may be in its death throes: daily breaches of long-standing democratic norms, warnings that the elections will not be settled through the ballot box, appeals to the military to uphold electoral results, assassination plots by fascist militias, and all of this in the context of a deadly pandemic, a spiraling economic cri...sis, racial unrest, and the destruction of the environment. How did we get to this point? And what is the way out of this very dangerous crisis? Join us for a panel discussion featuring two eminent public intellectuals, whose critical perspectives challenge us to think beyond the paradigm of mainstream American politics. Adolph Reed is professor emeritus of political science at the University of Pennsylvania specializing in African-American political thought, and the politics of race and class. His recent publications include Socialism and the Argument Against Race Reductionism (2020) and Antiracism: A Neoliberal Alternative to the Left (2018). David North is chairman of the editorial board of the World Socialist website (wsws.org), and the author of numerous books, including "The Crisis of American Democracy" (2004), "The Russian Revolution and the Unfinished Twentieth Century" (2014), and "A Quarter Century of War" (2016).
