There has been a steady increase in the rates of physical inactivity, especially in high income countries over the past 15 years. In fact, a recent study that the proportion of noncommunicable disease that could be attributed to physical inactivity ranged from 1.6% for hypertension to a shocking 8.1% for dementia. Dr. Courtney O'Bryan discusses this and more in our blog at sdsm.com https://bjsm.bmj.com//early/2021/03/01/bjsports-2020-103640

We're getting lots of questions about when vaccines will be available to patients. It could be in a few weeks or a few months. Be sure we are able to contact y...ou when vaccines are available. Your access to your provider's electronic medical record is an important tool to stay informed regarding the opportunity to receive a COVID-19 vaccination. If you need a primary care doctor, please call us and we can help! If you already have a primary care doctor, we urge you to contact your provider now. Ask them how to complete the steps to have access to your medical record.

The World Health Organization came out with new guidelines for exercise. All adults should get at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic activ...ity per week, including people living with chronic conditions or disability. Children and adolescents should get an average of 60 minutes per day. Adults should also include strength training 2 days a week. This is important to maintain balance and prevent falls as we age, as well as to improve bone and metabolic health. You can download the WHO Guidelines here for more ways to be active and improve your health. file:///Users/lindaillingworth/Downloads/9789240015128-eng.pdf See more

How you choose to feed your baby is a highly personal decision. Yet, if it is possible, the AAFP recommends breastfeeding, and/or for babies to receive expresse...d human milk exclusively for the first six months of life due to the many health benefits. Breast milk contains the probiotic bacteria and prebiotics that help babies form healthy immune systems and digestive tracts. Breast feeding benefits moms in supporting postpartum weight loss, reducing depression, type 2 diabetes, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and other conditions. Breast fed children experience lower risk of acute otitis media, gastroenteritis, atopic dermatitis, and life-threatening conditions such as severe lower respiratory infections, necrotizing enterocolitis, and sudden infant death syndrome. you can learn more about the choice to breastfeed at the AAFP link here: https://familydoctor.org/why-should-i-breastfeed/ See more

Sorry cats...we think most cats will probably object to this post! As we roll into flu season here's another thing to think about. Cats can get and transmit the... seasonal flu. While they mostly share it with other cats, they can give it to humans. There have also been a few reports of cats getting COVID-19. To be safe, limit your cats exposure to other cats and humans that aren't from your immediate household. If that is not possible, be sure to wash your hands after petting or playing with any pets that socialize with non-household pets or humans. https://www.cdc.gov//2019-n/daily-life-coping/animals.html See more

Dr. Jeff Anthony says, 'Women should not ignore this symptom'. The #1 sign of poor health that no woman should ignore is nausea. We often associate nausea with... poor food choices, food poisoning, poor digestion, or even pregnancy. Yet in women, nausea can be a sign of a serious illness like heart disease. Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in American women and accounts for one-fifth of their total deaths. Women often have very different symptoms of diseases than men experience. Subtle signs of heart disease in women include: Neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back or abdominal discomfort Shortness of breath Pain in one or both arms Nausea or vomiting Sweating Lightheadedness or dizziness Unusual fatigue Indigestion So stay on top of your health, ladies. If you experience any of the above signs, check in with us at any of our clinics for evaluation. Early detection save lives.
