Happy New Year from the San Diego Council on Literacy!

San Diego Council on Literacy 03.01.2021

As we look back on 2020, we are grateful for the work of those who strive towards literacy for all. This year, through a collaboration of generous donors, and a multi-agency effort to get books into the hands of San Diego kids, more than 120,000 books were distributed locally. We cannot say thank you enough. Thank you to everyone who made this possible. A special thanks to The Molina Foundation , The Wise Family Foundation , The David C. Copley Foundation, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for their book grants and donations!

Central to the literacy effort in San Diego County is the work of the 30 programs that are affiliated with the San Diego Council on Literacy. Annually, they serve over 180,000 residents of all ages, at no cost. This year, the personnel of these agencies were challenged to overcome new obstacles to providing instruction and resources. They succeeded by adapting and being innovative. We are proud to work in partnership with these amazing champions for literacy. We love these photos from DEEP San Diego’s distribution of 3,144 books to Horton Elementary! These books were generously donated to the San Diego Council on Literacy by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. DEEP is an affiliated program of the San Diego Council on Literacy, and they focus on ensuring that children whose schools are located in a cluster of low-income neighborhoods referred to as the Diamond Community enter kindergarten prepared for success and complete third grade reading proficiently.

In this show, we feature the Palomar College Transitions Program, designed to help individuals who are formerly incarcerated to attend and succeed in college. Our guests are Nora Kenney-Whitley, the director of the Transitions Programs, and one of the program participants, Luis Jimenez. Over the hour, Luis shares his journey, one in which he had to deal with personal challenges, a correctional system that was often cruel and unjust, and an education system that did not have ...a place for him. Most important to this interview was how Luis overcame emotional abuse early in life, a challenge he still copes with today. His worst subject, math, is now his gift, and his past is now his motivation to tell his story and engage in social work. Thank you to Nora for providing information on this important program. This #ThankYouThursday, we’re grateful for our many community partners and volunteers. It's through the generosity of the community that we are able to help so ...many people who are struggling during these challenging times. Thank you to families at Soille San Diego Hebrew Day School who assembled Shabbat packages to be delivered to local Holocaust Survivors. Each colorfully decorated Sprinkle Fairy package included challah, halvah, cookies, muffins, and other treats, and necessities like paper towels, soap, and hand sanitizers. And join us in "Uniting the community to support literacy!" Our Positive Parenting staff sorted 1,500 brand new children’s books, generously donated by the San Diego Council on Literacy through a Molina Foundation book grant. The Great San Diego Book Giveaway/La Gran Entrega de Libros de San Diego is a multi-agency effort to get books into the hands of San Diego kids this summer. We will be distributing the books through our Children’s Hub, Positive Parenting Program, and at our weekly diaper distributions. Thank you again for your support! Moving Forward Together! #letsreadsd #greatsandiegobookgiveaway #lagranentregadelibrosdesandiego
