Amid all the pain and disruption, a year of coronavirus has given Americans a new respect for those working to keep daily life as normal as possible, from the frontline nurse to the Amazon delivery driver. Near the top of this honor roll is an especially unsung hero: the Catholic-school teacher. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, Catholic school administrators have moved heaven and earth to keep their classrooms open. Read William Gurn's article on this subject that appeared recently in The Wall Street Journal. https://www.wsj.com//catholic-schools-are-beating-covid-11

Stefon Diggs | "He is a persevering person and never gives up. In 2018, there was a tight Divisional Round Playoff game between the New Orleans Saints and the M...innesota Vikings. With 10 seconds left, Diggs made the game-winning catch known as the Minneapolis Miracle. He knew never to give up. The game isn't over until it's over." #BlackHistoryMonth See more

In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we are highlighting Black Catholic women who have made a difference. Today, we focus on Sister Angela Faustina, CSJ. Sister Ange...la shared her story with the OLP staff in August when she lead us through a conversation focused on what it means to be anti-racist. At a young age, she learned from society's constructs to identify herself as white, being light skinned she was able to hide her African heritage. She saw that identifying as white would give her more opportunities, access, and safety. With this understanding, she entered the order of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet more than 50 years ago, as a white woman. Fast forward to the 2000’s and the stirrings of the order began to call Sr. Angela to her own identity and authenticity. In 2019, the CSJ Calls to Action encouraged the action of the Sisters and those connected to them to take on the care of the world, live authentically and face down our own racism. Go deeper, journey farther, respond boldly and dare to be prophetic. As a CSJ, Sister Angela felt compelled to speak out with her story in effort to help others investigate racism's lingering trail. She reminded our OLP community that we need to continue in discovery, individually and as a community. The work of anti-racism is not sequential, it's perpetual! Yesterday over 500 K-8 #SDCatholic educators met virtually to participate in a full day of professional learning aimed at supporting the needs of our students during this challenging time. Educators will continue their learning in smaller cohorts across the diocese throughout this school year. We are truly blessed with the best in #SDCatholic schools! #UDL #HyFlex #BlendedLearning #Feedback #TeacherClarity

Hello St. Mary’s Community! Here is the weekly installment of our teacher feature! We hope you are enjoying it and are getting to know our teachers a bit better...! This week we are featuring our new 2nd grade teacher, Ms. Ochoa! Thank you for all you do! My full name including my saint name is Cammie Elizabeth Christian Ochoa. This is my 1st year at St. Mary, Star of the Sea. This will be my 11th year teaching and 1st year teaching 2nd grade. I have always taught 1st grade. Before teaching I worked for PSA/USAirways. I enjoy teaching science because experiments are always fun, although they can be quite messy. I enjoy teaching because the students make me laugh and every day is different. I still remember teachers that made a positive difference in my life and I enjoy seeing my students learn. I was born and raised in Pasadena, California. I love it here and not just for the weather and the outdoors activities, but because most of my family lives here and my fantastic friends, too. It is hard to pick just one favorite travel destination. It depends if I want to be entertained with history and different cultures or just relax. Hmmm...for relaxing it would be renting a sailboat with friends and sailing around the British Virgin Islands for 2 weeks. In July (after Covid) a friend and I are flying to Africa and taking a motorcycle tour through Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. So exciting as we have never been to South Africa before. I want my students to remember how I made them feel and how comfortable they felt in our classroom. It is important that they realize I took an interest in them and genuinely cared about them.
