My heart is tuned to the quietness that the stillness of nature inspires. Inayat Khan
Welcome to South Africa! Join us as John introduces us to a fascinating plant, Banksia spinulosa from the Proteaceae family. This plant is native to the South Cape of Africa, as well as Western and Central Australia, but is perfectly suited for our climate too. It thrives here in our South African Garden and would make a great addition to any home garden in a Mediterranean-type climate like ours. This area is ready to bloom, so be sure to stop by the South African Garden on your next visit to see these striking plants in person!
We love aeroids at the San Diego Botanic Garden. In fact we have an entire conservatory full of aeroids, orchids, bromeliads, and other exotic plants. The plant of the day is Anthurium hybrid ‘Oaxaca’. This beautiful plant has a very sweet perfume which is especially strong in the morning. Anthuriums are rarely fragrant but the smells can run from sweet and fruity to unpleasant odors and a scent some people describe as dog vomit. This anthurium smells a bit like grape bubble gum. #aeroids #anthurium

The hot weather has finally left us, thank goodness! The cooler weather makes for splendid strolls along the verdant paths through the garden. One benefit of the recent warm weather has been the continuation of tropical blooms throughout the garden. Here are some of our very brightly colored hibiscus. #hibiscus #tropicalflowers #hawaiianflora
It might be surprising to learn that San Diego has more native plant species than any other County is the US, including Hawaii. Many of these wonderful plants, including endemic and endangered species can be found in our California Gardenscapes Garden. Today, Tony is shining light on a local treasure, the Baccharis vanessae. This species is commonly known as the Encinitas Baccharis because it was found right here in Encinitas. There are less than a dozen left in the habitat where they were first described as a species. Listen as Tony explains how we will be reintroducing this plant to its native habitat where it’s since been lost.
