California education law affords you the opportunity to record your child's IEP meeting, as long as you give the team a minimum of 24 hours notice. This recording can be helpful to review later as you prepare to consent to the IEP. Here's our final "Best of 2020" content post This one is from March, just after CoVid school closures... Did you know that IEP assessments should cover a variety of areas? When a child is evaluated to see if they meet eligibility for special education, every area of possible concern should be covered. This may include cognitive/learning skills, communication, motor skills, behavior, etc. If you have any questions or concerns, make sure to ask the IEP team before signing the... assessment plan. This month we've been discussing how to resolve IEP disagreements. Ever been there??? Sometimes as parents of children with unique needs, we find ourselves at odds with our child's special education team. Before filing for due process (a legal hearing), you may consider requesting mediation. Mediation is a federally-mandated, voluntary process used to resolve disputes between parents and school districts. Mediation meetings are conducted by an impartial, trained, third...-party. If an agreement is reached to resolve the dispute, the mediator helps the parties record their agreement in a written, signed document. Hope this information is helpful!
