As a medical scribe, it’s really important to document all the subjective elements of a patient’s complaint in their chart. Can you identify all the important elements to include in the patient’s history? Come back tomorrow for the answers! #medicine #medicalstudent #medicalschool #med #medstudent #medschool #medicalscribe #medicine #doctor #physician #premed #prehealth #medicalscribes #healthcare #opportunities #medlearn #scribe #bestmedicalscribes #medical #medicalcareer #emergencyroom

I didn’t know what a scribe was before college but as I joined pre-med clubs, they told me about how scribing is a really good opportunity to get more involved in direct patient-doctor interactions. Once I learned more about scribing, I thought it would be a good opportunity and a good part-time job to get more experience. I work in an OB/GYN office, and it’s really cool how it combines surgery and primary care. For the patients’ privacy, we don’t go in the patient rooms, so... we need to catch doctors at the right time to get information. That’s the hardest part - they’re busy and you don’t want to bother them, which means timing is important. Once we have all the information, we transcribe what the doctors write on their chart and work with the billing office and sonographers to get all the information together. I’ve always paid attention to detail, but I am way more detail-oriented now. It’s something that’ll carry on when I’m a physician because you don’t want to miss any diagnoses or anything small or you could make a huge mistake. I am passionate about underserved communities and teaching kids which is why I got involved in tutoring underprivileged students and medical trips in college . My advice to pre-med students is to really choose activities you are passionate about, even if it’s not related to medicine. Whatever it is, go for it - don’t create a checklist of things you need to do because you won’t be passionate about it and when you have medical school interviews, they’ll see that."scribing. #premed #prehealth #medicalscribes #medicine #healthcare #opportunities #medschool #medstudent #medlearn #doctor #physician #scribe #bestmedicalscribes #medical #medicalcareer #emergencyroom #clinic #underrepresentedinmedicine See more

We shared Rowena’s story on Sunday but in her interview she went on to describe how scribing helped her find the right path for her. Check it out here. When you start scribing, the hardest part is making sure you don’t forget anything. It’s a very fluid job - things just pop up and you have to be ready to put everything into a chart. If a code happens, you have to make sure to chart all the procedures. The doctor could be talking to you one minute, and the next minute someo...Continue reading

Our spotlight this week is on Rowena who talks about being able to see the different aspects of a provider’s job. I think scribing is great because we really start to understand everything that's involved in patient care. In the ER, we see what the providers have to do to get a patient admitted or transferred because there can be so many barriers to getting a patient the care that they need. I don't think we really understand that until we see the providers making phone call...s, trying to get other doctors to accept a patient. It's very eye-opening - we don't really get to see this side of medicine because everyone thinks it's just the doctor seeing the patient and that's it, but there's so much more to it. I also really enjoy talking to the providers. I think all the providers are super cool, and you learn a lot about their lives and how they got to where they are. Since they’ve been through what we’re going through, each of them gives a different perspective. I think it’s one of the best things about scribing. Because there are so many doctors and PAs, you get to talk to all of them and they’re always willing to help you out. They all have very distinct personalities too, which is cool, so the way they approach the shift is very different the medicine is the same, but each provider has their own style. Most of them are very good at talking to the patients and making sure the patients are comfortable. You get to see all the different ways providers approach talking to patients and getting histories. There is so much more to medicine than we think, and learning about the different aspects of medicine is one of the very big pros of scribing. #premed #prehealth #medicalscribes #medicine #healthcare #opportunities #medschool #medstudent #medlearn #doctor #physician #scribe #bestmedicalscribes #medical #medicalcareer #emergencyroom See more

We loved what Ally had to say about her experience as a non-traditional student. Read about her whole journey and advice she can give others with the entire transcript of her interview here. I started scribing in February of this year. Training was a lot of information in a very short amount of time but I was super fortunate because I had already had some medical background so the medical terminology was really just review for me. The hardest part was just learning the char...Continue reading
