Scotts Flat Lake Trail Project 29.12.2020

TRIBUTE TRAIL SUSPENSION BRIDGE TRAIL This is one of my favorite places to share with people. It is a manifestation of my ultimate dream of local artists and craftsmen contributing to our desire for beautiful outdoor experiences. This gives you a rare view into the making of the river art integrated into the stone walls. Ferrocement, love and creativity. You can also see our gravity chutes delivering stone and materials. We built three of these to eliminate impacts to th...e adjacent vegetation. I feel inspired to bring all of our silo'd organizations and amazing business community around this vision in a way that fear of change and ego does not stop, for example, our offers to fund and develop the sugar loaf trail which still lays fallow four years later. I would love to see simple dirt paths within public road easements that acknowledge the need to be mobile, active and safe without being hit by cars. But most of all, I would love understand how to engage people who have these community building skills to trust this vision and help us bring people together. Peace out and reach out

Scotts Flat Lake Trail Project 11.12.2020

This 8 year long effort to develop an amazing trail system at Scotts Flat Lake is now dead.. $500,000 grant wasted and thrown away by NID and BONC club leaders for no reason other than some people are haters and wanted the venue for their enduro bike event exclusively. NID’s Recreation Director, Peggy Davidson was a hero to the community for her final gift and vision of this project. Instead she was forced into early retirement and her grant and project killed. I am dis...appointed with our community’s capability to support, protect and develop our trails master plan even when it is handed projects on a silver platter. I would love to see our community pursue clarity about what happened and how to prevent it again in the future so we can be more resilient with our shared goals. As a professional trail builder and a major capital contributor (over $60,000 for this project alone), I will be crafting elsewhere till this is resolved and community efforts are more protected and supported. Restorative Justice needed... Peace out. Z

HELP! 8 days left to save over $500,000 of public funding for the largest trail project ever in western nevada county. Why was the managing NID recreation director forced out, why was NC Councilman Strauser using public office to take over this grant under the radar for a new race venue. ... Why did the trail get changed without permission, stakeholder input or permits. Why oh why can’t we have good things. YOUR MISSION: Rescue our community trail project from double dealing politics. * Call your NID Board Reps. *Request NC Mayor Senum investigate their councilman’s actions *Get involved in our local bike club and offer compassionate leadership *Encourage the BYLT to be supportive of our community trail projects *Encourage the Union and Yubanet to cover stories that involve their advertisers Zachi has done all he can. He is out of town developing a 40 m trail on the coast. It’s up to us!!

Heading up to the mountains this weekend! If you have never explored the trails around historic Forest City this may be a great opportunity. Over 60 miles of meandering paths connecting spectacular views, waterfalls and stone arched bridges. This week, local volunteers are pitching in to help clean the trails and cut back growth to make the trails awesome. The Knights are a super fun group to check out if you are looking for a fun and playful group doing great things. They currently are building 50miles of new trail creating new legacy 100mile trail experiences in cooperation with the USFS. Chip in and check it out... https://www.meetup.com/YubaTrailsStewards/events/270699356/

For years I looked up to agencies with god like respect, and I am still amazed at what can be accomplished when we bring resources together. But I also have to painfully become aware of what happens to our public interests when misaligned people take over recreation positions. We have worked with State Parks, USFS, Countys, BLM, Citys, NGOs and Special Use Districts like NID. All these organizations are great and I have worked with them all for years developing community ...trail projects. But they are only as good as their current representative and that has changed a lot in 30 years. The Pro NID recreation person I worked with for 10 years was recently forced out just before her project I have been supporting was undermined. If you dont understand how vulnerable water districts are to abuse by special interests, check this out...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3saU5racsGE See more

Scotts Flat Lake Trail Project 03.10.2020

For those who were not involved in building the first Scotts Flat Lake Trail, this is the guy who made it all happen with the collaboration and leadership from NID's Recreation Director Peggy Davidson. It was 8 years of patient efforts, fundraising and collaboration. Zachi to all of our benefit has beat the same drum of support for our regional trails for decades. So it is to all of our surprise to hear of individuals who are attempting to smear his reputation by saying he ...cannot work with others and is somehow scamming our community with his decades of volunteer work. The same people tried to use their position on the Council to have him removed from the Suspension Bridge Project. We are glad they failed, what a remarkable project. The same folks recently sent letters to Americorps and got our staff removed at the new Yuba Trails Stewardship who had been organizing our efforts at Scotts. To those who forcibly pushed Peggy Davidson from her job and opportunity to complete this amazing project, shame. She deserved better. For those attempting to take over the grant and project under the radar, we all request that you get your enduro race needs in a more collaborative and less hurtful way. Our local bike club was not formed to be used as a hurtful tool. This grant and project specifically were meant for all our community members, so give back the maintenance to Yuba Stewards so we can all care for our trail and stop putting berms and jumps on the multi use trail. Folks, I love the Scotts Flat Lake vision and goals. It has been an amazing 8 years volunteering for this community vision and the biggest gift I had hoped to bring my community. I wish to apologize for how hard this is for me to share. My friend Eric recently gave me good coaching. And while I do my best, sometimes my anger and sadness gets in the way of me letting you know my needs and what I am feeling. I know many are impatient with the lack of trail resources, organiza...Continue reading

Scotts Flat Lake Trail Project 08.06.2020

At some point, our community needs to grapple with what is needed to achieve our trail infrastructure goals. We definitely want more recreational tourism and connective trails and we have the wealth and potential volunteers. What we don’t have is a single organization that represents all our collective efforts and fills in the gap’s between. As director of Forest Trail’s alliance, and a big supporter and contributor to our community’s trail vision, I would like to request ...more volunteer leader ship in my bike club BONC specifically that will work with our community trail stewardship to support the Scott’s flat trail project. I think our bike club should play a valuable role in our community trail vision, and we will need leader ship aligned with building an more harmonious and collective approach. While you may have heard that folks running the bike club are supporting this $1.2 million trail expansion at Scotts flat, the truth is, that they have taken our community trail maintenance agreement against our legal contract issued by the state of California. This occurred without a single conversation. After, Duane publicly admitted that they tried to take our grant. At a board meeting I went to to request support, I was treated poorly and the only willingness to support the project offered was half a day of maintenance in april. The trail has since been altered club reps into a race course with high beams and jumps without consent to the stakeholders and against previously agreed Multi-use Trail standards. These guys acting on our behalf have tried to take over our federal grant issued to our licensed and insured multi use trail org. This is bad. State Parks and private attorneys have confirmed we have a legal right to start project but we would like to start this amazing project in harmony and aligned rather than disrupted. Help support a more harmonious and successful future by making sure your favorite community group joins our local YubaTrails Stewardship to weave a more resilient and thoughtful structure of support for our trails vision.

Scotts Flat Lake Trail Project 18.05.2020

We are currently seeking support or resolution related to the taking of our capacity to care for our Scotts flat Trail we built and paid for. We are also aski...ng for community representatives willing to serve on a community council representing trail user types and organizations. We all need to work together. These trails are for all of us. It is important especially when community funds and public property are utilized to make sure there is fair and balanced planning for access for all recreation users. Our multi use community trail has been hi jacked and is being changed to suit speeding cyclists while marginalizing the safety and experiences of hikers, runners, dog walkers and more. Illegal and unsanctioned rerouting of the trail, shortcuts, berms and jumps now litter the once gradual multi use trail. Don’t call me and complain. We can’t get a straight answer either from NID and my own bike club told me to f*#&k off when I pleaded my case before the self appointed volunteer board. So, you want to see 12 miles of sweet new trail, 30 stone arched art bridges and another 150ft suspension bridge installed with the $600,000 public grant we got... HELP US HELP YOU! Join YTS and volunteer!

This is a great photo, and we should definitely have some of our own cups made. There’s no room for hate and disrespect in the wonderful world of crafting trails.

Scotts Flat Lake Trail Project 09.03.2020

12 miles of new trail, 30 amazing art bridges, 150 foot suspension bridge and a new 6 mile trail to cascade shores. Our irrigation district is considering canceling support for this project including a $600,000 public grant we have received and over $100,000 of independently raised funds. Please let NID know that this type of infrastructure and public funding is important to our community.... Please consider encouraging the current volunteer leadership of my club BONC to return our maintenance contract and support development of trails for all users. The current only connector between the lake and Pioneer Trail that I personally designed and built is being modified without my consent and without a plan for hikers or other users to utilize safely.

Scotts Flat Lake Trail Project 17.07.2019

Building legacy Trail is like crafting a great home brew with love and attention to detail and the idea of sharing something awesome with your community. On our 2nd Trail of the season, Dry Foot Trail in Napa. Insanely intense cat 5 level building with structural stone arched bridges, 100% side-slopes and winches and hoists sometimes the only thing suspending the 4000lb excavator like a fat spider on a web. In early winter we are up two hours before light leaving as ligh...t creeps into the canyon and returning behind wavering headlights at the end of the day. The base camp is a oasis of light with floodlights lighting the massive oak above and icicle Christmas lights dangling around the parameter. Music brings cheer to the small dry space and the kitchen a place of activity. We are 2200 ft into the perilous effort on our 13 day. It feels like the suspension bridge project the going is so slow. If you love the outdoors and great trails...and would like to join our staff of lovers, give us s shout, hiring for our second crew now. See more

OP ED CRAFTING TRAILS by Zachi Anderson [The destructive power of Ego and what is in the way of organizations pulling together for community infrastructure]... "You have to understand one thing about trail building. We all understand Trails. This makes us believe we can all build trail, and we probably all can. We all have our own instincts, but what we have to do is back up that instinct with something called, craft. Craft is sweet distillation of time spent learning the depth and essence of any skill till there is a homogeny of intention and capability. Like worn driftwood, time shapes the nuances of character. I would love to demystify the roll of the project manager and trail designer, and promote on-site experiences and opportunities that expand understanding and ability. Beyond the dirt, the tools and sweat is connection to our common goals and the even bigger challenge of managing shared interests. The paths we walk and the inspirations we seek are not limited to a single parcel or jurisdiction. Connection like a skipping rock touches many interests and does not recognize preferences or ideal partners. It requires a deep commonality and recognition of the importance of community movement to overcome fear and indifference. That fabric we are all a part of requires strong hands of intent and a steady needle of focus to weave our goals of connective trails. Collaboration fails all the time. Everything we do in this process fails all the time. It is a cascade of challenge. Each challenge is an opportunity to dig deeper, refine and overcome. Even though you alone articulate this roll of artist and director of a lot of ideas, that alone will never make the project work. We all want the same thing, a great moment, a great experience, a great trail. Collaboration. This is what it takes right?" [Zachi Anderson is the Executive Director and Founder of Forest Trails Alliance, a regional non-profit trail organization. Member of the Professional Trails Builders Assn and 25 year veteran of building trails and community effort. FTA currently is supporting over $2.5million dollars of regional trail projects and has developed over 70 miles of regional trails. His OP ED is in reference to challenges related to bringing special use groups and civic organizations together behind community trail development.]

We were lucky enough to connect wth local cascade shores resident Sharon Waechter to complete our historic survey. Sharon is a professional archaeologist of the more hardy variety than the spectacled arm chair type. Not only did she survive the knarly terrain the trail traverses but she was not fooled by the pig bones and cosco artifacts we scattered along the corridor. With years of experience and skills she brings to this fascinating study we are lucky to have her. Thanks so much Sharon for your support of this great community project.
