Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth may be a warning sign of gum (periodontal) disease. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on teeth. Bacteria cause the formation of toxins to form, which irritate the gums. If gum disease continues untreated, it can damage the gums and jawbone. ... #badbreath #halitosis #persistent #badtaste #mouth #gumdisease #periodontaldisease #plaquebuildup #plaque #teeth #toxins #bacteria #irritategums #treatment #prevention #damage #gums #jawbone #dentalcare #oralhealth #findyoursmilebrightenyourworld #scmdentistiry #santaanadentist See more

The Coronavirus has impacted everyone’s daily routine and created an element of uncertainty. Unfortunately, tooth pain doesn’t go away during these times and we highly recommend that you address the situation sooner rather than later, so it doesn’t become a more complex issue. Tooth pain can be unbearable. You can’t see it, it doesn’t go away on its own and you can’t massage it like a muscle knot. But tooth pain can be an indicator of a serious problem that requires immediate... attention from a dentist. Most toothaches are the result of tooth decay or advanced gum disease. The pain you feel usually when you eat or drink something sweet, very hot or very cold is an alarm bell telling you that the tissues and nerves inside your tooth are irritated. The Coronavirus, as well as other viruses, thrive in the oral and nasal cavities. We can’t stress enough the importance of at-home oral care, especially at this time. We want you to know that South Coast Metro Dentistry is safe, as we follow the guidelines provided to us by the American Dental Association (ADA), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) and are constantly monitoring these agencies for updates and changes. We have made additions to the practice for your safety: 1. Implementation of HEPA air filters throughout the office to keep everyone safe from potentially harmful aerosols 2. Use of advanced extraoral HEPA vacuum suction systems to capture potential harmful aerosols 3. Strict adherence to all CDC and OSHA guidance on sterilization and disinfection protocols 4. Social distancing by managing your time in the office and total numbers of patients at any given time 5. We ask all patients to wear facial covering when entering the office 6. When scheduling your visit, we will be asking several screening questions and again when you arrive 7. We will be taking your temperature upon your arrival 8. You will be able to wait in your car and we will text you when it is time for your appointment 9. We will have hand sanitizer available throughout the office If you have outstanding dental treatment that has been delayed, we want to get you in right away to prevent further worsening of your oral health. In addition, in order to maximize your insurance benefits for 2020, we need to schedule your appointment right away. Any remaining benefits not utilized this year will be lost. Our team is ready to help you "Find Your Smile, Brighten Your World". #socialdistancing #coronavirus #shutdown #stayathomeorder #essentialbusiness #dentalcare #oralhealth #overallhealth #dentist #scmdentistry #findyoursmilebrightenyourworld #dentalhealth #cdc #osha #hepa #covid19 #healthandsafety #health #wellbeing #safetyprotocols #santaanadentist

Did You Know? Alcohol causes dehydration and dry mouth. People who drink excessively may find their saliva flow is reduced over time, which can lead to tooth decay and other oral infections such as gum disease. Beware of things that go "crunch" Who doesn’t love the nice, satisfying crunch of a potato chip? Unfortunately potato chips are filled with starch, which tends to get trapped in your teeth. Sports Drink - Helpful or Harmful? They sound healthy, but sugar is a top ingredient for many sports and energy drinks. The American Academy of Pediatrics says sports drinks can be helpful for young athletes engaged in prolonged, vigorous physical activities, but unnecessary in most cases. What Causes Gum Disease? Plaque is the primary cause of gum disease. However, other factors can contribute to periodontal disease. These include: Hormonal changes, such as those occurring during pregnancy, puberty, menopause, and monthly menstruation, make gums more sensitive, which makes it easier for gingivitis to develop.... Illnesses may affect the condition of your gums. This includes diseases such as cancer or HIV that interfere with the immune system. Because diabetes affects the body's ability to use blood sugar, patients with this disease are at higher risk of developing infections, including periodontal disease and cavities. Medications can affect oral health, because some lessen the flow of saliva, which has a protective effect on teeth and gums. Some drugs, such as the anticonvulsant medication Dilantin and the anti-angina drug Procardia and Adalat, can cause abnormal growth of gum tissue. Bad habits such as smoking make it harder for gum tissue to repair itself. Poor oral hygiene habits such as not brushing and flossing on a daily basis, make it easier for gingivitis to develop. Family history of dental disease can be a contributing factor for the development of gingivitis. #oralcare #dentalcare #dentalhygiene #dentist #gumdisease #gums #toothloss #teeth #hygiene#gumtissue #oralhygiene #dentaldisease #gingivitis #homones #illness #periodontaldisease #medications #scmdentistry #dentistoffice #healthymouth #findyoursmilebrightenyourworld #santaanadentist #smoking

Sticky foods are your mouth's worst nightmare When it comes to picking healthy snacks, many people put dried fruit at the top of the list. But many dried fruits are sticky. Sticky foods can damage your teeth since they tend to stay on the teeth longer than other types of food. Good to know. Watch the amount of sugary foods you eat. When you eat sugary foods or sip sugary drinks for long periods of time, plaque bacteria use that sugar to produce acids that attack your enamel, the hard surface of your tooth. Most carbonated soft drinks, including diet soda, are acidic and therefore, bad for your teeth. ... #sugaryfoods #candy #hardcandy #bacteria #acid #erosion #toothdecay #bacteria #plaque #rot #badforteeth #teeth #gums #healthymouth #dentalcare #healthcare #hygiene #halloween #candytreats #oralhealth #oralcare #scmdentistry #findyoursmilebrightenyourworld #santaanadentist #healthymouth See more

What type of toothbrush should I use? Buy toothbrushes with soft bristles. Medium and firm ones can damage teeth and gums. Use soft pressure, for 2 minutes, two times a day. Both powered and manual toothbrushes clean teeth well. Manual brushes with mixed bristle heights or angled bristles clean better than those with all flat, even bristles. Powered toothbrushes may be easier if you have trouble using your hands. ... Set a reminder to replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Toss it sooner if the bristles look bent or splayed out. Bent bristles don't clean as well. (They're also a sign you may be brushing too hard.) #toothbrush #electrictoothbrush #dentist #dentistry #oralcare #oralhygien #brushteeth #brush #tooth #teeth #softbristles #gums #2xaday #replacetoothbrush #scmdentistry #dentalcare #santaanadentist #findyoursmilebrightenyourworld See more
