We teach music through rock because contemporary songs offer an effective toolkit, particularly in group performance-based music. Just as importantly, popular music opens a door to the history of the American experience. Behind that door, and between Francis Scott Key and Nirvana, lie generations of unrecognized Black musicians without whom there would be no Rock and Roll, and by extension no School of Rock. In large part, our musical tradition is rooted in the sorrow and str...ivings of marginalized people, and specifically in the story of African Americans. The wailing blue notes of a guitar echo the cries of young Black men wrongly accused and condemned to chain gangs. Rock’s call and response began in field-side churches where black mothers prayed that their children would outlive them, their grandchildren would learn to read, and their great-grandchildren would have a life of relative comfort out of the sun. The very back beat of modern music harkens to the villages of great-great-grandmothers and great-great-grandfathers that celebrated their connection to the earth and to each other. Through music, the spirit of people call out to us. And we hear them. They are calling for us to stand with them today and fight for a better nation. Right now, many of our employees and students are calling for us to do more as well. As we stand for our country to affirm that there should be true liberty and justice for all, we demonstrate how our voices can blend to produce a harmonious chorus. The School of Rock team is committed to doing more. We will begin today to broaden our repertoire to feature more music created by African American artists as well as to highlight that work more prominently in our communications. We will further develop our curriculum to educate on the Black community’s history, not just the creative byproduct of that collective experience. Perhaps most importantly, we will be even more explicit that the inclusiveness and equality that we demand during rehearsals and performances is carried off-stage as well. This is a time when we all must come together to create a generation of leaders pulling our delicate nation toward justice. We embrace our role in that mission.
