Chemistry major, Emma Kocik ’22, was selected as a 2021 Barry Goldwater Scholar, the most prestigious scholarship given to undergraduate students in the natural sciences, engineering and mathematics. She plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Chemical Oceanography to become a professor at a research university investigating the impacts of climate change on biogeochemical cycling in the Arctic Ocean. Today is #WorldAutismAwarenessDay and we want to recognize Science on Tap guest, Professor Dr. LouAnne Boyd, from Chapman University Fowler School of Engineering for her research that assists the autism community. Along with her students, they have worked to develop assistive technology for people with autism. Through VR and computer games, they create virtual environments to enable inclusive play. Schmid College invited students, faculty, and staff to watch the documentary film, Picture a Scientist, and then participate in a community discussion about diversity, equity, and inclusion in the sciences. Picture A Scientist Film chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists and are providing a new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all. The discussion took place on November 11, 2020. Guest panelists included: Dr. Jane Willenbring, Associate Professor at Stanford, who was featured in the film, and Dr. Kelly Wrighton, Associate Professor at Colorado State.

Kim Environmental Geochemistry (KEG) Lab is continuing research while practicing physical distancing. Using tripods and mounted cameras, Dr. Kim instructs his students on how to use advanced lab equipment in the Keck Center from his home.
This fall, our Grand Challenges Initiative students are learning problem-solving and teamwork by studying the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV2) pandemic. We have the opportunity to help students make sense of the world around them and empower them to play a role in contributing solutions to the COVID-19 pandemic, says Greg Goldsmith, Ph.D., an assistant professor of biology and director of the Grand Challenges Initiative.
