Santa Clara County Search and Rescue 06.11.2020

Our general team held their first in-person training at Grant Ranch Park this past weekend. In-person trainings had been on a brief hold given the ongoing health crisis. This briefly turned into a real search and medical call to help a downed biker. Great job team!

Thank you to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office STAR-1 for for hosting our SCCSSAR K9 team and CARDA - California Rescue Dog Association M/A partners. Our next generation of canines received some exposure to helo operations when responding to searches.

We may have many figurative ‘irons in the fire’, but our dedication to each continues. Currently, we are assisting CALFire with the wildfire near Kerckoff Lake ...which is now 108 acres and 60% contained. We are also still searching for Sandra Johnsen Hughes in the Sierra National Forest near Chiquito Lake. Tulare, Fresno, Mariposa, Kings, Santa Clara, and Marin County all have joined our Search and Rescue Operation. CalOES is providing communications and California Air Guard is assisting with aerial searches. Hughes is 54 years old, 5’3, 150lbs with brown hair and eyes. In addition, we are a part of the Joint Incident Command for the COVID-19 pandemic with Madera County Department of Public Health. We are still actively patrolling Bass Lake with our Boat Patrol Team, answering calls for service, and all the other services Madera County counts on us for. We absolutely could not do all this without the help of so many partners. On Tuesday, June 9th, Santa Clara County Search and Rescue hosted the FIRST EVER annual Bay Area Search and Rescue Trivia Championship Game! The winning team was the Bay Area Mountain Rescue Unit (BAMRU), with a team average of 23 points out of the 35 total trivia questions. The winning team gets to take home not just bragging rights, but the newly created Bay Area Search and Rescue Championship Belt (shown below) and a yummy goodie basket of treats for the team's next training! Special thanks to all the wonderful teams who joined this virtual event, including Alameda County Sheriff's Office - Search and Rescue Unit, Bay Area Mountain Rescue Unit (BAMRU), Contra Costa County, Marin County Search and Rescue, and Sonoma County Search & Rescue. Until next time, stay safe everyone!

Over 400 SAR team members from 20+ teams participated. Congratulations to our own Santa Clara County SAR team, who were able to pass the re-accreditation!
