We are really excited about announcing the winner of the 2nd Urban Innovation Program - the team City Canvas, who developed a solution for city art and culture, primarily focusing on local art. The second finalist is the team 2-Way from UCSD, who developed a workflow solution for small and mid-size cities:

How would you optimize transportation for low and moderate income neighborhoods? How should citizens interact with the get-it-done app? How do we create a repository of cultural assets and events in our city and rank them? The urban innovation sprint is starting tomorrow: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/innovation-sprint-weekend-begi

After being with us for over a year, Sandra Ainslie (aka Luna Montiel) is moving on to become the CEO of Girls Inc. San Diego, an organization that provides STEM programs to underserved girls in our region. While we're sad to see her go, this is an exceptional opportunity for Sandra. Sandra joined SCALE when we were just developing the IGNITE | SCALE | SAN DIEGO urban innovation program and played a key role in defining the strategy, methodology and the implementation of the innovation program. Sandra - SCALE would not be where it is without you! Thank you and knock 'em dead in your new role!

It's starting tonight:
I’m really excited about the challenges we’re going to be tackling this year as part of the IGNITE | SCALE | SAN DIEGO program. It’s a unique opportunity to add...ress some of the very ambiguous problems and make an impact on our city. One of the challenges I wanted to share with you today is the one presented to us by the Commission for the Arts and Culture. Not everyday do we get a chance to invent something that would impact the way the city interacts with the local art. It’s about creating an intuitive map of cultural assets and venues in our city! How do you create something like that? How do you build a ranking engine that would prioritize cultural assets based on a following or attention they’ve been getting? How do you make it intuitive and sticky? This is definitely a task that goes beyond pure engineering and UX skills! Learn more about this and other challenges at the kick-off info session on Friday: See more
