Todays Wednesday Warning is a reminder to "KEEP THEM SAFE"! You just brought home the cutest new shelter dog and you can't wait to show him off to the neighbors... on the block so you immediately take him for a walk. 5 minutes in he panics tries to get away from you and slips out of his collar and runs away! You recently offered to foster for a local rescue and they have just dropped off your new rescue dog and you cannot wait to see how much he will love playing in your big yard, so you take him out there, off leash. He immediately runs straight for the fence line and jumps it and runs into the hills! You are kindly watching your sisters dog for the week while she vacations in Hawaii and your kids bolt out the front door like they normally would every Saturday am, leaving it ajar, forgetting there is a new dog in the house. Moments later your sisters dog is gone! You decide to take your new dog on vacation or a road trip. You stop to give your dog a potty break. You open the car door and your dog jumps out before you can even put a leash on OR you take your dog out on leash to explore but a big rig truck on the nearby road drives by and spooks your dog so he backs out of his loosely fitted collar or harness and runs away! These above scenarios demonstrate some of the most common dog ESCAPES and all of these can be avoided if you just take the proper steps. When you adopt a new dog (or bring any new dog into your home), you have to remember they have no idea what's going on. They will try to run, bolt, jump or dig, to escape. They don't yet know they have won the lotto with you. They don't know yet how much you will love them and take care of them. This takes time to happen and to bond with your dog you must have patience. We know that you must give them time to decompress so they can relax and learn that they are ok. They need time to understand that you are not leaving them (like they have been left before). They need to learn that a walk does not mean they should be scared (strange noises and places) and that being in the yard is their home, not a place to break out of. So please be patient and keep them safe at least for the first week that they are with you. Make sure collars, harnesses and leashes are on and fit properly. Try using a separate martingale collar and leash when on walks or road trips. Start with small walks to get them used to the area, to walking on leash and to you. Put a baby gate or small kennel fence inside at the front door to help stop them from slipping out and to remind others that a dog is in the house and that the door should be closed when they come and go. Do not leave them alone in the yard the first week to avoid them escaping. Keep a leash on them when you let them out in the yard, walk them around in the yard with it, so they can explore safely and don't feel the need to try to jump out. Only you can KEEP THEM SAFE! Please share to help educate others.

Keeping Your Dog Safe in Extreme Heat: Important Tips in Dealing with Extreme Heat Keep your pets indoors when temperatures are extreme and in the shade if they are outdoors for a very short time (potty, etc.). Walk your pets early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the day.... Give pets plenty of water to avoid dehydration. When you walk your pet or take your pet outside, carry water with you. Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle. Temperatures in cars can increase rapidly and become lethal. If your pet is panting excessively, drooling, struggling to walk, is lethargic, or has bloody diarrhea or vomiting, know that that these are potentially signs of overheating. Be careful with dogs on asphalt in the heat. Not only are their paws sensitive but because their bodies are closer to the asphalt, they can overheat more easily. As always, if you think your pet is in distress due to the heat, call your veterinarian as soon as possible. Animals with short noses such as Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boston Terriers , are especially vulnerable in the heat. Dogs and cats cool themselves by breathing through their mouths, but those with flat faces cannot cool as quickly and need extra attention. If you are hot, your pet is too!

COURTESY POST: Yay for Grace, she just went into a foster to adopt situation and will be working with a trainer if it's a fit. Meet 10 month old Grace. This sweet girl arrived in Santa Barbara last month from Turkey. Grace bonded with a local family during their stay in Turkey and they made arrangements to bring her back to Santa Barbara to find her a loving home.... Grace loves other dogs and cats but she does better with bigger dogs, she can be a goofy and funny and she can often forget her size. She also loves to be a lapdog! Grace can be super mellow but she's also adventurous and has been known to try and climb trees after squirrels. She loves being outside, probably due to her breed type. She's an active girl and loves walks and adventures. Grace loves being with people and will create a strong bond with her new family. Grace still has puppy energy and does need the normal puppy training to learn how to be the best dog she can be! If Grace finds the perfect match and forever home, her sponsor family will consider providing a stipend for a pre determined training program. Grace meeting a new feline friend: https://youtu.be/NdXfkKopQO0 If you're interested in Grace, please call Claudia: 1- 808-446-1068 There will be an application process and home check.

The rumor on the street is that more dogs go missing on July 4th than any other day of the year. Pets, especially dogs, HATE FIREWORKS. Be prepared in the event that your pet does escape by keeping your pets’ IDs up to date! It’s a good idea for all your animal companions to always wear a collar with an ID tag that includes your name, current phone number and any relevant contact information. Collars can fall off, so microchipping your pet is also highly recommended. If your ...pets are microchipped, make sure your contact information in the microchip registry is up-to-date. Secure your pet! It can be equally easy for your dog to slip through an open gate left unlatched by a party guest. Keeping your pet confined inside is the safest option. Don’t leave your pet outside loose in the yard or kennel. They will have no place to go and the combination of restraint and noise will traumatize them even more. Provide crates or other safe places for your pets to hide inside the house. Cover the kennels with blankets to dampen the noise. Make sure all doors and windows are securely shut and locked. Shut all blinds and drapes to minimize visual stimuli. If necessary, put your pet in a room with no windows. Turn on the TV or radio to help drown out the noise of the fireworks to minimize your pets’ exposure to the noise. Keep the volume at a normal level; turning it up too loud may only increase your pets’ anxiety. Walk your dog at least 1 hour before the sun sets to prevent exposure to the fireworks. Take an extra-long walk to use up his extra energy if possible. If you think or know your pet requires a calming aid or sedative, check with your pet’s veterinarian before giving such aids and follow directions carefully. If your pet gets lost or you find a lost animal, report it to the nearest animal control agency/shelter as soon as possible. Check the shelter website regularly for found pets. Many emergency vets will also accept found dogs after hours. Posting on social media lost & found pet pages are also a great resource. That’s it! The considerations are simple to keep your beloved dog safe!

Frankie is the sweetest most loyal boy you will ever meet. He came to us because his owner sadly passes away. He is amazing around other dogs of all sizes and h...as gone to the dog park and dog beach and does great with everyone he meets. He loves to go for walks and walks nicely behind you. He currently can go for a 40 minute walk and does just fine. He wouldn’t be a dog you could take hiking or on a longer walk however as his back legs will become weak if you over do it. Frankie does need an owner who would like to learn the basic foundation of dog psychology as he does have some pretty intense separation anxiety. His foster mom is currently helping him to improve with that and would like to be able to teach his new owner how to create a more safe and comfortable feeling environment in his new spot, We would want to take our time with his adoption and make sure the family could come to multiple meetings with Frankie before he could get adopted. Frankie is a really incredible dog but he does need a very special human to help him through his last years of life. When Frankie is with his human is very calm and can go anywhere with you. He loves car rides and adventures, but when you need to leave the house is when he struggles. He will bark and whine the entire time you’re gone.

Since 1981, American Humane has celebrated Adopt-a-Dog Month each October in an effort to help the estimated 3-4 million animals waiting in shelters every year get the loving, forever homes that they deserve. Be a hero this month and adopt a dog from your local shelter or rescue group.

***Update Wonder has been adopted to a wonderful family with doggie siblings to play with! Thank you all for caring and sharing! Adoption photo in comments ...****** The small town of Buellton, CA is known for things such as being the home of split pea soup along with being where the movie "Sideways" was filmed. More importantly it's also is where the most magical creature ever named Wonder is looking for a home at Santa Ynez Valley Humane Society & DAWG Wonder the 4 year old Husky is special for so many reasons. You may notice that this handsome guy does not have eyes. He recently had to have his eyes removed due to severe glaucoma. Despite this painful condition that he suffered from when he was found as a stray in Bakersfield along with the numerous setbacks this poor guy encountered in his short life, he won't let anything break his spirit. He is about the happiest, goofiest most loving dogs that I have ever met. Being around him just makes you happy. It didn't take me long to fall in love with this dog. He bonds quick and snuggles into you shortly after meeting you all while giving you kisses. That alone melted my heart. He loves other dogs too and kids and cats. Everyone is Wonder's friend. Wonder also gets around so well for being a blind dog. You almost forget he can't see. It is amazing to see how adaptable he is. He would make the most perfect companion and addition to any family. All he wants is a family to call his own that he can love and preferably a canine sibling that he can play with along with a couple squeaky toys. If you would like to meet Wonder please visit the Santa Ynez Valley Humane Society website at www.syvhumane.org/adoptions. The facility is closed to the public and adoptions are being done by appointment only after approved application. I promise you won't be disappointed. Also, some kind soul donated a backseat extender and a hammock to go home with him to his new forever home to help make him feel more safe in the car. Whomever gets this dog will be the luckiest person and will need to let me come visit

We were unsure if he would pull... through, but our amazing medical staff was able to save him! At only 6 weeks old he was too young to stay at the shelter. So our awesome rescue partner Santa Ynez Valley Humane Society & DAWG stepped in and saved this little guy. Team work saves lives!!! See more

***Update Jagger has been adopted thanks to all of your shares! He has an amazing new family and a canine sibling to play with. Happy new life Jagger.********* ...Hello friends, Jagger here needs our help. You see this handsome 10 year old chocolate lab is looking for a home due to no fault of his own. Jagger's elderly owner is very sick and is no longer able to care for him. We don't want this sweet boy to end up at a shelter. He still has a lot of life and love to give. All he wants to do is be with you and play ball. He was quite obsessed with the squeaky ball we used during our session. It was so cute to see how playful he is. What else can we tell you about this special boy? Well he is very good with kids and does well with other dogs too. He hasn't been around cats, but there is not much that he does not like. Jagger will need to lose some weight as he did not get as much exercise or walks over the last few years. If you know of anyone in the Santa Barbara area that may be interested in this love bug please reach out to Jonathan @ [email protected] or 805-698-7577. Also a special thank you to the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden for letting us use your lovely grounds for his adoption photos. Please help share Jagger so we can find him a home soon. Thank you!
