The man who is crying is George Gillette who was the tribal chairman of the Mandan, Arikara, and Hidatsa tribes of North Dakota in 1948. He was crying because h...e was forced under the threat of death of all his people to sign over the tribes’ homeland on the fertile floodplain of the Missouri River---in order to build the Garrison Dam. After the dam was constructed, the three tribes were scattered, their communities and extended families flung to different shores of the 200-mile-long Lake Sakakawea, their centuries-long agricultural practices destroyed. Diabetes did not exist among the tribespeople prior to the construction of the dam and is now an epidemic. To anyone who still believes, "This is not *my* America." This is what your America, and Canada, and Australia & NZ, as well as pretty much all of South America, was built upon.

Historic day for Humboldt and all of California: After 160 years, the Eureka City Council officially transferred Tuluwat (a 200 acre island in Humboldt Bay) ba...ck to the Wiyot Tribe. The island, once home to tribal villages, holds significant cultural and spiritual significance. The land was illegally taken from the Wiyot’s in 1860 following a massacre that killed over 200 tribal members by settlers. Amazing day (after years of hard work) for all involved! See more

Harold J. Vollkommer, Ed.D. Interim Superintendent October 15, 2020 Dear San Bernardino City Unified School District Families, Providing a safe learning envir...onment for students remains our top priority. As you know, COVID-19 conditions in San Bernardino County remain at concerning levels that make it unsafe to open our schools. Although we do not have a timeline for when our schools may reopen to students, we have begun preparing for in-person instruction. Knowing the educational option that best suits your child will help us in our plan to eventually reopen schools when conditions are deemed safe to do so. We need you to tell us how your child will learn for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year. Will your child learn entirely from home, an option known as the Extended Distance Learning Model? Or will your child do better in the Blended Learning Model, where they attend some school in person combined with some online learning? Please make that decision as soon as possible and notify your child’s school by November 6, 2020. The enclosed flyer provides the options for recording your educational choice, which is as easy as logging into the Aeries Parent Portal or calling your child’s school before the deadline. The sooner you provide your selection the better prepared we will be for the eventual return of students. As you weigh your options, please consider that the San Bernardino City Unified School District has been working around the clock to implement numerous safety measures, which include installation of temperature screening kiosks, hospital-grade air purifiers, among other large-scale improvements. This is part of our Board of Education’s commitment to ensure the highest degree of safety and adherence to state and local mandates so that our schools are prepared to reopen when deemed safe to bring students back. We look forward to the day when conditions are safe to welcome students back to their second home. In the meantime, please help us by telling us how you want your student to learn for the rest of the school year that ends in June 2021. The deadline is November 6, 2020. Sincerely, Sandra Rodriguez, Ed.D. Assistant Superintendent Student Services

Ely Parker was a Native American, born to a Seneca Nation family in 1828. Raised in his tribe, but educated in white society at a Baptist Mission School, he lea...rned to bridge the two worlds from a young age. His perspective and learnings put him in a position to take on important roles in his tribe. As a fourteen year old, the elders of his tribe selected him to become a translator, interpreter and scribe for meetings with government leaders. Then years later, after meeting and becoming friends with Ulysses Grant in 1860, Ely became a Lieutenant Colonel for the North during the Civil War. And when it came time for the South to surrender, it was Ely who wrote final draft of the terms. After the Civil War, Ely became the first Native American to be Commissioner of Indian Affairs.
