Such great news for Balboa Park!
WBW. Go to www.savestarlight.org to learn more, volunteer, or donate to bring back to life the amazing Starlight Bowl in Balboa Park. The Bowl has always been... in our family w/my Dad going there as a child starting in the 40's up until today where I serve as a Board member. Seeing The Beastie Boys w/special guests The Rollins Band & Cypress Hill w/Halloran was a great one back in the day. Thanks to Derek Schaefer for the flyer also. See more
In addition to the Ford Building (now home to the San Diego Air & Space Museum), the #FordMotorCompany sponsored the #FordBowl, an open-air amphitheater at the south end of the Palisades. Both structures are designed in the Streamline Moderne style to reflect the latest architectural trends of the time (1935). The Ford Bowl featured an open-air amphitheater with bench seating for an audience of over 3,000. During the Exposition, the Bowl was the venue for a wide variety of musical performances, including choirs and symphonies. The structure later became known as the #StarlightBowl. In celebration of #BlackHistoryMonth, the San Diego History Center has launched a new project: 'Celebrate San Diego: Black History & Heritage'. This will be a d...igital and physical exhibit that San Diegans and beyond can enjoy online and in-person when the Center reopens. Additionally, the San Diego History Center is seeking contributions from the public for an upcoming project that honors and documents #BlackHistory in the county. The community’s contributions will be added to its permanent collection so many generations can enjoy it for decades to come. Check the San Diego History Center's website and social media channels to experience (and contribute) to this shared journey. sandiegohistory.org/exhib/celebratesd_blackhistoryheritage/

We believe the arts are a tool for liberation that lives within us all. And through the arts, we can all collaborate and build a better future together. Artists are rightfully looked to as second responders in times of crisis. They support mental and physical health outcomes and community resilience and rebuilding. They help us to escape and dream, to cope and mourn, to believe and heal, to imagine and create. Artists help us to find our way and have historically been at the forefront of challenging cultural and social hierarchies to effect positive change. Our young people, especially, are sharing their voices in response to what they see and feel. -@calartscouncil photo by @sandiegouniontribune @ Balboa Park
The arts matter because art is meant to move people either on an intellectual or emotional level. Whether this is a book that stays with you days later, or a performance that moves you spiritually or a song that makes you look at the world around you in a different way. The purpose of art is to cause a reaction and with this purpose, it can create a synergy of change; change in attitudes, perceptions, and thoughts. Catherine Brookes
