Don’t Forget to Fall Back on Sunday! - Remember that Sunday morning we set our clocks BACK by one hour, so that 1:59am actually happens twice in one day. Daylight savings has to do with energy savings, particularly in old factories. By slightly adjusting the clock to account for the changes in the sunrise and sunset times, employers were able to save money on heating and electricity. (Sorry, Simpsons fans: it has nothing to do with stupid farmers.)... So this Sunday on November 1st, Fall Back your clocks one hour. This is the time change that we all love, because it gives us an extra hour of sleep! With all the internet-linked clocks and watches, I don’t know that we’ll need to remember to do this for much longer. I will only need to reset my oven and microwave, as my clocks, watch, and phone all link to the internet and take care of it for me. Which items are you still manually resetting? - http://savenewport.com//dont-forget-to-fall-back-on-sunda/

Orionids Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight Through Thursday - TONIGHT through Thursday night will be the peak nights to watch the Orionids meteor shower, starting from the 21st to the 23rd of October. Actually, it will technically be Tuesday night through Friday morning but you get the drift! The waxing gibbous moon will be out the during the evening hours, but it will set before the prime time viewing hours. Halley’s comet is actually to blame for this series of meteor showers ...as it is a reflection of the debris that it has kicked up you can best view the Orionids by looking towards the Orion constellation. Maximum meteors: around 25 meteors per hour. Velocity: 41 miles/sec When: As usual: The best time to see ANY meteor shower is the hour or two before dawn. Try between midnight-2am for some great results without losing *too* much sleep! You may also be able to catch some of these beforehand as spectacular Earth Grazers, beginning at about midnight. Where: If you can, get as high up as possible to sit above the light and air pollution to get the best sights. I personally prefer Top Of The World in Laguna Beach. Editor’s note: If you snap a great picture of the meteor shower please send it in! - http://savenewport.com//orionids-meteor-shower-peaks-toni/

Trump's Visit, Council Still To Vote on Bike Ban, and Upcoming Meteor Shower - This weekend, Trump visited the Newport Beach home of Oculus co-founder and billionaire Lido Isle resident, Palmer Luckey. A "Mega MAGA Boat Parade" was launched, but the secret service enlisted local authorities to keep significant distance from the house-- at least four rooftop snipers included. The Beach Boys played-- minus Brian Wilson. Streets, sidewalks, and the harbor were overflowing in ...Continue reading

Trump visiting, Trump Mega MAGA Boat Parade, Trump Fundraiser on Lido, Beach Boys Playing at the Turning Basin(?) - Sunday at noon, at Palmer Luckey’s house on Lido Isle (Luckey is of Oculus fame), there will reportedly be a fundraiser for Trump and Trump himself is reportedly visiting. UPDATE: Confirmed. Trump will be visiting. Our weather department has forecasted very, very heavy traffic with a chance of light to moderate protests. Peninsula residents already know wel...l what traffic can get out here on a normal sunny day. There have been conflicting reports as to whether or not Trump himself will be attending, (UPDATE: Trump will be attending) but the Beach Boys themselves are rumored to be playing at noon there, too, and a large military boat is said to be parked outside. UPDATE: This boat is Luckey's personal craft. A Trump Mega MAGA Rally is planned for the day, doubtlessly flooding the harbor with boats from Newport and surrounding cities. https://m.facebook.com/events/355074269092989 This event is scheduled for Sunday at 11am. - What we know: Trump Mega MAGA Rally: 11 Trump Fundraiser at noon What we don’t know, but may happen: Trump may attend Beach Boys at the Lido Turning Basin (maybe?) at noon On a personal note, this writer asks that you please be courteous with your on-board speakers and general volume if there is indeed a free Beach Boys concert, guys and gals. But once they stop playing, please do let freedom ring as per normal. I have a feeling this weekend is going to be a bit chaotic on the harbor. Stay safe, have fun, and enjoy! - http://savenewport.com//trump-mega-maga-boat-parade-trump/

Newport Beach Votes to Ban Bicycles & Strip Property Rights Today - Tonight, the Newport Beach City Council will be voting on two items of merit: The first one is a full-out ban of any bicycles on the boardwalk during summertime weekends, making the boardwalk PEDESTRIAN-ONLY, and forcing all traffic into the roadways. Merchants in the area say that about one-third of business comes from bicycles, so this could be a devastating blow to the local economy. This plan, proposed by... Assembly Candidate Diane Dixon and backed by Councilmen Brad Avery and Jeff Herdman-- both running for reelection-- (along with incumbent Joy Brenner) will be voted on tonight. Costa Mesa Brief did a video on it (and this writer was the one interviewing people!), where they asked what people thought-- right there on the boardwalk in McFadden Square. You can watch that video, here: https://youtu.be/OKP2xiiBrbI If you wish to have your voice heard to stop the bike ban, please sign the petition at http://savenewport.com/bikeban EDIT: Politicians are saying this is not what they meant when they said pedestrian-only, due to public pressure. Hear them say it in their own words, here: https://newportbeach.granicus.com/mediaplayer.php @ time stamp 4:25:45 & @ 4:29:30, which is where they lay it out, verbatim. Or, jump straight to the juicy stuff, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8Ufd2XCM18 and here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKpIRjZotYE The second big item on the agenda is to revoke property rights for rental homes, revoking their freedom to rent out nights and weekends, and instead restricting them to rent only to people who wish to stay longer (currently, they wish to force a three night minimum rental period onto the free market, further diminishing property rights for property owners in their city) We strongly encourage readers to email city council with their opinions on these and other items. They can be reached at [email protected] - http://savenewport.com//newport-beach-votes-to-ban-bicycl/

The Historic Balboa Saloon, Opening TODAY at 11am - Today at 11am, the Balboa Saloon will reopen after having been closed for 7.5 months, due to the state and city governments forcing shutdowns in the name of a Coronavirus.... The Balboa Saloon is a building which used to be a lot for car shows, a bath house, a bank, and so much more, before being converted into the local watering hole that so many generations in Newport Beach have enjoyed for so many years. Balboa Saloon will be reopening as a restaurant and selling pizza and hotdogs as their meals. So if you are ready to smell that fresh salt air from all the fishermen past and present, come on out to celebrate with the Balboa Saloon and their new outside patio. Other locations previously open with outside patios can be found here: http://savenewport.com//beach-ball-opens-now-even-closer-/ And here: http://savenewport.com//mutt-lynchs-blackies-stag-bar-elk/ - http://savenewport.com//the-historic-balboa-saloon-openin/

Candidates on Council Dixon, Avery, Herdman: Propose Making the Boardwalk Pedestrian-Only - As we warned Tuesday, the proposed Electric Bike Ban was only one step in the full plan to ban all bicycles from the boardwalk. Many people could simply not bring themselves to believe that any politician would ever propose such an item.... However, last Tuesday evening, in the council chambers, Councilwoman Diane Dixon (who is running for Assembly) made a motion to ban *all vehicles* from the boardwalk, and make it pedestrian-only during the summertime (from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekends). She was joined in this motion by Councilmen Brad Avery and Jeff Herdmanboth running for re-election as well as Councilwoman Joy Brenner. Please sign the petition, here: http://savenewport.com/bikeban/ The reason? Speeding. Yes, that’s right. Because some people were speeding, and because the council refuses to prioritize enforcement for speeding on the boardwalk, now they are considering banning all bikes from the boardwalk, which would end generations of fun and tradition on Balboa Peninsula. Please sign the petition, here: http://savenewport.com/bikeban/ Worse than that, we already saw the disaster that was created when the council attempted to enforce the rule against Surrey’s using the boardwalk. The four-wheeled rolling roadblocks began using the main street instead, causing traffic backups for blocks and in some cases miles. Forcing all bicycles, skateboards, scooters, and Segways to follow Surreys onto the main drag of Balboa Blvd will put residents at more risk as frustrated drivers become increasingly more aggressive in their attempts to pass them and their contempt for the riders themselves. We’ve already seen this movie. We cannot ban vehicles from the boardwalk without having a place to put them. If you wish to be heard on this item, council will be voting on it in their next session. You can also email them at [email protected] to voice your opinion. There are heavy lobbying efforts from boardwalk property owners which have been ongoing for years. They of course want a more private beach and have made significant campaign contributions to politicians who are backing this idea. Your emails and your voice is critical to stopping this effort to limit access to an amenity that Newport Beach is famous for. Please sign the petition, here: http://savenewport.com/bikeban/ - http://savenewport.com//candidates-on-council-dixon-avery/

Council Considering Banning Electric Vehicles on Boardwalk - We’ve all seen ’em. Speed-racers on the boardwalk. From skateboarders to rollerbladers to bikes to Segways to scooters. The one thing they have in common? No, not that they’re electric. It’s that they’re speeding, silly.... Well, instead of enforcing the speed limit, Newport Beach is going to electric ban propulsion systems, instead. That’s right, Diane Dixon’s Bike Ban proposal (http://savenewport.com/2017/05/30/bicycle-ban/) from 3 years ago is back just as she begins her campaign for higher office. When asked at the last meeting why they just don’t enforce the speed limit, the answer from staff was we don’t have enough police to do that. I hope our readers let that one marinate for a while: They don’t have enough enforcement to ban the speed-limit-breakers, but apparently *do* have enough enforcement to ban *all electric vehicles*, most of which are not breaking the speed limit. The next step, according to Dixon in her May 2017 Townhall, is banning bicycles also, and making the boardwalk a walking-only boardwalk. If you would like to speak out against this bike ban, please view tonight’s meeting on your TV or at http://savenewport.com/council at 7pm with your phone fully charged so you can dial in to the access number at the appropriate time. - http://savenewport.com//council-considering-banning-elect/

Weekend Wrap-up: Earthquake and a Deadly PCH Crash - DEADLY PCH CRASH: First, our condolences to the families of the life that was lost on Sunday. Early Sunday morning at 5:35am, Huntington Beach police attempted a traffic stop at the area of Goldenwest St and Ellis Ave on a black Honda Accord. This vehicle, occupied by two adult males, was a stolen vehicle. The vehicle did not yield to police but continued at legal speeds until it hit the "open area" of PCH, at which poin...t it accelerated and topped speeds of over 100mph. Huntington Beach PD cancelled the pursuit before the driver hit Brookhurst, due to erratic driving and a threat to public safety caused by running from the police. Unfortunately, the driver continued as though he was still being chased, and minutes later, HBPD was informed of the car crashing in a single-car accident on PCH by the Starbucks in Newport Beach. The driver fled the vehicle but was later apprehended and taken to an undisclosed hospital, due to his significant injuries. The passenger suffered fatal injuries, and succumbed to his condition. Huntington Police are asking anyone with information on this incident to call their Detectives, at 714.536.5951 EARTHQUAKE: Did you get woken up by the Earthquake over the weekend? At 11:38:46pm on Saturday 9/19, an earthquake sent its waves through Newport Beach. The quake was centered at 34.039N 118.080W, about 40 miles North from Newport. Big Drama on the Big Island (Balboa Island GARAGE SALE this weekend!) - It's that time of year again, when Balboa Island hosts their community garage sale. Each year, we are told that it will be their last one, as organizing it has become too cumbersome for the ones arranging it. This year, local Newport Beach realtor Steve Roose decided to pick up the slack. Saturday the 19th of September at 7:30am, Balboa Island Garage sale will begin, this time including raffle prizes s...uch as: VESL Paddle Board Package from Luxury Real Estate | $1,000 Value Gift Box from Balboa Jerky Jerky, Jams, Honey, Nuts | $80 Value 2 Tickets for Ultimate Whale Watching Experience with Newport Coastal Adventure | $150 Value 4 Tickets for Whale Watching with Newport Whales | $100 Value 2 Tickets for 1/2 Day Sport Fishing Trip with Davey’s Locker | $100 Value Gift Basket from Americannery Balboa Island | $100 Value Gift Card from CIAO Italian Restaurant Gift Cards from Sugar ‘N Spice 2 2 Hour Paddleboard Passes from Paradise Paddle | $100 Value You can purchase your tickets, here: https://www.balboaisland.com/luxury-real-estate-raffle-pri/ So what's all the big drama about? Well, Don Abrams, who is apparently speaking for all of the Balboa Island Improvement Association-- an unofficial organization with no actual authority-- has declared tomorrow's garage sale as "an unsanctioned event", as fears of Coronavirus continue to scare many residents. Abrams has set a new date, for the BIIA's garage sale, for October 24th. So this year, it sounds like the island will be having TWO garage sales. We look forward to seeing which one has the bigger turnout-- but if you're interested in the best of the goods, try getting to the earlier one :) - http://savenewport.com//big-drama-on-the-big-island-balbo/
