My special guest today, 2/9/21 is vocalist Maria Mendez from the Netherlands. ~~~~~~~~~~ Vocalist/curator/educator/composer/producer Cathy Segal-Garcia hosts "...Noontime Facebook Live Hangs" 3 days a week, featuring casual interviews with successful music professionals, mostly jazz. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Maria Mendes is a Grammy and Latin Grammy award-nominated Jazz vocalist and composer from Portugal, whose talents have been praised by musical legends such as Quincy Jones and Hermeto Pascoal.A Jazz singer of the highest order. Her poise is as impressive as her power Downbeat Born and raised in Portugal, into a family with a special artistic sensibility for classical music and visual arts, the submersion in Jazz music was progressive, to the rhythm of a curious ear that demanded to know more. She knows from her mother that at the age of three she wanted to be an opera singer. After seven years dedicated to the studies of classical music, she has studied Jazz in New York, Brussels, Rotterdam and Porto. In recent years, she has released three solo albums and completed several successful tours with performances all over the world, including the prestigious Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Blue Note Jazz Club (New York) and the North Sea and Montreux Jazz festivals. Based in the Netherlands for more then a decade now, she has progressively felt the need to express more of the Portuguese roots in her music. As a Jazz musician in heart and soul, she explores in her new album CLOSE TO ME a completely different genre, Fado from her native Portugal. "As a child, I heard the melancholic sounds of Fado every day during bus trips to school, says Mendes. Fado is in our identity, she explains. It is our way of evoking homesickness, a universal feeling, which goes beyond linguistic and social barriers. CLOSE TO ME features the Grammy award-nominated Jazz pianist John Beasley (producer and co-arranger with Mendes on this album) and the multi Grammy-award winner Metropole Orkest. On December 2020, this album has been awarded with the most prestigious Dutch music prize, the EDISON for Best Jazz Vocal Album. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coming days: Maria Mendez, Ron Newman, Laila Biali, Jocelyn Medina, Adrianne Duncan, Luther Hughes, Michael Barsimanto, Vince Mendozaand more! www.cathysegalgarcia.com for more info and Future guests Archives: https://www.dropbox.com//qc8d0o/AABvHNUZMow6msoWvZeulOJoa And if you feel like you'd like to help jazz musicians who are in dire financial need, please go to https://californiajazzfoundation.org/become-a-member-make-/ Thanks!

My special guest today, 2/8 is Italian jazz vocalist, Roberta Gambarini! ~~~~~~~~~~ Vocalist/curator/educator/composer/producer Cathy Segal-Garcia hosts "Noont...ime Facebook Live Hangs" 3 days a week, featuring casual interviews with successful music professionals, mostly jazz. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Born and raised in Turin, Italy, to music-loving parents (who had actually first met at a jazz concert), Roberta Gambarini grew up listening to her father's record collection constantly. Her first vocal inspiration was Louis Armstrong, but she soon discovered Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, and Billie Holiday, as well as blues artists like Mahalia Jackson and Bessie Smith. At age 12 she began playing the clarinet, but realizing the versatility and talents of her clear alto, she moved to voice, singing and performing in clubs by the time she was 17. The next year she decided to move to Milan to pursue her career more seriously, and a third-place finish at a national jazz radio competition brought her enough exposure to jump-start her career, sending her around Europe performing at festivals and with other artists, including Hammond organist Emmanuel Bex in 1997. In 1998 Gambarini received a scholarship to study for two years at the New England Conservatory in Boston, and soon after arriving she competed, and eventually finished third, in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition behind Teri Thornton and Jane Monheit. Though Gambarini did not receive a recording contract from this accomplishment, it did give her enough performing opportunities that she decided to leave Boston and move to New York, where she could focus better on her music and the scene. In 2006, after years of working and becoming a kind of cult favorite in the New York jazz world, Gambarini started Groovin' High in order to release her American debut, Easy to Love. A collection of standards, the record impressed critics enough to garner the singer a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album, alongside Diana Krall and Nancy Wilson, among others. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coming days: Maria Mendez, Ron Newman, Laila Biali, Jocelyn Medina, Adrianne Duncan, Luther Hughes, Michael Barsimanto, Vince Mendozaand more! www.cathysegalgarcia.com for more info and Future guests Archives: https://www.dropbox.com//qc8d0o/AABvHNUZMow6msoWvZeulOJoa And if you feel like you'd like to help jazz musicians who are in dire financial need, please go to https://californiajazzfoundation.org/become-a-member-make-/ Thanks!
