Join Strive for Strength Co-Presidents, Emily Maseba and Ruisha Yang, in supporting SASF's Big Day of Giving on May 7, 2020. Make a generous donation at www.bi...gdayofgiving.org/SacramentoAsianSportsFoundation Emily Maseba: "The first time I heard about Strive for Strength was in elementary school from my older sister. She told me about how much fun she had at the retreat, making new friends and listening to all the empowering speakers. After that day, I couldn’t wait until I was old enough to attend one of the retreats. Middle school rolls around and I was finally ready to attend the Strive for Strength annual retreat. I remember feeling nervous the day of the retreat not knowing if I would be with my friends or if I would be alone. Fortunately, the speakers and all the positive people around me were extremely welcoming and friendly. I learned so much that day and left with many new friends. The following year I became a board member; and in 2019 I became Co-President. Being a part of Strive for Strength has helped me become a strong leader. The board members, parents, supervisors, and volunteers have made me a more organized, responsible, and positive person and I’ve had such a great time working with all these amazing people. Next year, I will be attending Cosumnes River College majoring in Communications. I believe the lessons I learned through my participation in Strive for Strength have prepared me to excel in my future." Ruisha Yang: "I still remember my first Strive for Strength Retreat in 7th grade. I came in with all my friends and left with many more. The speakers were so inspiring and at the end I learned many valuable life lessons. From that moment on, I knew that I wanted to be a part of this community. Beginning last year, I have been the Co-president for Strive for Strength. I have learned a lot from my fellow board members. It is a rewarding experience to be a part of this community and make an impact on many young lives. I am currently a senior at Cosumnes Oaks High School and next year I will be attending the University of Southern California. I will be majoring in business with a concentration in finance and entrepreneurship." Since 2007, Strive for Strength (S4S) has been an organization ran by local high school girls whose main goal is promote women empowerment, education, and self-confidence. Each year, the S4S team organizes and hosts a one-day retreat for middle school and high school girls, which features inspirational speakers, informative presentation, and interactive confidence-building activities. This year, the 2020 retreat was specifically dedicated to Suicide Prevention training for teens. In partnership with Sutter Health and Kaiser Permanente a workshop was developed with school districts and mental health professionals to destigmatize mental health discussions, educate and empower teens to lesson anxiety and depression and prevent suicide. COVID-19 cancelled the retreat but there are plans to reschedule as soon as possible. 2020 also marks S4S’ move to be coed.
