Meet Nikki Tobia. Nikki is a Development Officer for Major Gifts for the Free Wheelchair Mission. In developing countries, the World Health Organization estimates that 75 million people need a wheelchair, the vast majority of whom cannot get one on their own. Many are forced to live on the ground or to wait to be carried. Disease, malnutrition, armed conflict, and lack of proper medical care are all major causes of disability in the developing world. Their wheelchairs are si...mple, cost-effective, and highly functional. They are designed with locally-available resources in mind, with the goal of providing the transforming gift of mobility to as many people as possible while still maintaining a standard of excellence. My dear friend and former partner in crime, Denise, text me during Covid to tell me she had met a wonderful man and they were moving in together. That in itself nearly knocked me out of my chair. So imagine my surprise when she called to ask if I would do wedding portraits for her!! Her new fiance' wanted her in a gown to have beautiful portraits taken. Gotta love this man! So Denise, my non-wedding friend ordered up a beautiful gown and veil from none other than... Amazon, bought flowers to create a bouquet and off we went to capture this amazing time in her life with her man. I really love that he wanted to save this memory in portraits and I'm happy she gave in to his wishes because she glows with happiness in these photos. One thing I love about being a professional photographer is that no two days are alike. Some days I'm at the studio doing shoots. Some days I'm on location doing shoots. Many days I'm at my computer editing images, creating marketing, working on social media, doing accounting or on zoom calls with clients. I love the variety. As we end of this insane year, it is easy to get negative about it. We may start looking back at mistakes we think we made this year, which leads to looking at mistakes we made throughout our life. If we’re going to analyze the negative, let’s give double time to analyzing the positive. Yes this year was a doozy, it caused us all stress and anxiety at times and we may not have been as productive in some areas but in the lack of productivity did you strengthen family bond...s? Did you connect more or reconnect with friends? Did you get rested up? Did you pick up a new or old hobby you had forgotten you loved? Did you take better care of your health? Along with good is always positive and usually more positive. So as this year ends give yourself grace, be kind to others and even more so be kind to yourself. Let’s look into this new year with hope and positivity that it will be different than 2020. That we will be stronger, kinder and more adaptable. Happy New Year!

Yeah, let's file those statements under "things I no longer believe!", because in the last 12 months of living through a pandemic, riots/violence, and the craziest presidential election ever, I've learned that living each day to the fullest, enjoying friends and family to the max and being grateful for what I have is much more important than planning out a future I have no control over! We are coming up... on a brand new year, and instead of making New Year's resolutions, I'll be making promises to myself. Promises to make more quality time with friends and family, to go more with the flow and stop trying to plan everything, to stop and smell the roses, to stand at the edge of the sea every now and then and really, really enjoy the carbs I do decide to eat! As a photographer, I much prefer being behind the camera than in front of it. I tell my clients how much fun their session will be, how great they will look and how amazing their images will be. It was very interesting to have those words spoken back to me by @nichellebishopphotographer who was taking on the daunting task of photographing a fellow photographer! I was in my head, worrying about how I looked and if I was doing everything right. Being a photographer, I know too... much about what’s going on behind the camera. It’s an unnerving twist. Lol. As Nichelle shot, directed me and talked me through my insecurities, I began actually having fun and playing around. This image is a result of the wonderful, sweet space she held for me. The results of The Portrait Masters Awards and Accreditations are in for Fall 2020. I entered 10 images and all 10 received Bronze awards! The first image was only 2 points from receiving Silver and my highest scoring image to date! I'm so happy with these result especially since we were closed down with Covid so it was difficult to create images. I also heard the 5 international judges were super tough this year. I want to thank Doug Vannier, Leida Kanno, Cassie Bowerman and Randy & Brenda Geary for being such great models and inspiration for our shoots!
