Happy May 1st, Everyone!!! We have some wonderful news to share with you all . I am sharing this publicly for the very first time... and before I let this news ...out into the world, I want to say thank you to everyone who’ve always believed in not only in me, but my vision. Maria’s Portuguese Table PBS series has been picked up by a distributor and they will be offering the series to All PBS Stations in the the USA. Yes... our series is going from a regional series to a National Series!!! It will be available for all stations to pickup starting as early as this June. It’s a rolling type of airing so it will air in different markets at different times... and I signed a three year contract. So the first season will have plenty of time to reach the 220 million viewers several times. More importantly, for the First time on a National level with PBS, Portuguese food & culture will be showcased. All these years of watching the cooking and traveling series on PBS, I always wondered why the Portuguese were never invited to sit at the table with all the other cultures. Well, we now have a seat!! I are beyond proud, excited, humbled and grateful for everyone who helped this series get to this point. To Cineasta Digital Productions and crew and to Rhode Island PBS who always believed in this project. To BayCoast Bank for being the major sponsor. I believe in miracles and every time I see this article, I can’t help but think of what confront, hope and great belief this gave the Portuguese community of South San Francisco. Santo Cristo Society commissioned this statue from Portugal as a gift to All Souls Church. I heard stories of it arriving on a ship and being brought by horse and buggy to All Souls Church. When the Church burned down, Santo Cristo statue was the only thing that survived! All Souls church gifted... the Statue back to Santo Cristo Society, since it took them many years to rebuild. All Souls Church decided not to have statues on display, and is made of all concrete. We are very proud of our statue, we are very proud of what it represents and all the miracles he provides to many who need them. You can see statue on our profile picture. To all our members, other societies, and friends: This past year has not been easy, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. We’re hoping that you and your family are healthy and well (and getting vaccinated). However, to remain safe, we are not holding our annual festa this year. Although we are seeing positive moves in stopping Covid-19, we want to remain extra cautious and vigilant. We are hoping to resume our normal annual festivities with either our Festa das Conta...s in October, or if things are still precarious, our Christmas party in December. FAZ HOJE 120 ANOS DA EDIFICAÇÃO DO MEMORIAL ÀS 12 VÍTIMAS DAS GRANDES CHEIAS DE 1896 NA VILA DA POVOAÇÃO. Hoje, dia 15 de Agosto faz 120 anos da edificação do m...emorial às 12 vítimas das grandes cheias de 2 de Novembro de 1896 na Vila da Povoação. A história de um concelho não é só feita de alegrias e neste caso concreto é parte integrante da nossa história o triste acontecimento que decorreu na Vila da Povoação a 2 de Novembro de 1896. A Povoação até então pouco era conhecida e falada e este foi um dos acontecimento da época que obrigou muitas pessoas a conhecer a terra por onde desembarcaram os primeiros povoadores da ilha de São Miguel. A 2 de Novembro de 1896 deu-se a terrível e arrasante CHEIA que enlutou o Concelho, morrendo doze (12) pessoas entre homens, mulheres e crianças, conjuntamente com muitos animais, naquela horrível inundação de águas que pareciam diluvianas e, então, levou o nome da Povoação por todo o País, chegando até ao estrangeiro. No dia 15 de Agosto de 1899 foi edificado o memorial às 12 vítimas da cheia, memorial, este, que se encontra implantado no Bairro da Caridade (Comissão) e que há alguns anos tinha uma bica de água para cada lado, o que hoje não tem, também no cimo do memorial existia uma pirâmide de pedra, o que hoje também não existe. Ora aqui neste último ponto, é importante alertar as entidades para o facto de não descaracterizarem os nossos monumentos, pois deve manter-se a sua originalidade, até para mais sendo um memorial de tão relevante importância. Embora não façam o devido caso nem reconhecimento da nossa história/identidade, quer por desconhecimento ou mesmo relaxo intelectual, quem comanda os destinos do nosso concelho deve ao menos respeitar os nossos antepassados, bem como preservar a originalidade de todo o nosso património! Para que todos saibam, este memorial foi implantado com o intuito de lembrar às gerações vindouras a tragédia que os povoacenses, há mais de cento e vinte e três anos (123), viveram!... das angústias, do pavor, do luto sofridos!... Dois de Novembro é uma data fatídica que deve ser recordada e relembrada por todos os povoacenses, não deixar cair no esquecimento os nossos antepassados, a nossa história, é de uma importância primordial. No memorial encontra-se as seguintes descrições em ambos os lados em Latim: Destruens Hic tempestas aqua miseriam affert o que traduzido quer dizer Destruindo, a tempestade traz a desgraça a este lugar por meio da água do outro lado tem a seguinte descrição: Costrurns, humana caritas hic sitim aqua depellit o que traduzido quer dizer construindo, a caridade humana afasta, neste lugar, a sede por meio da água. Vamos dar aqui resumida notícia das pessoas que faleceram nesta terrível inundação. É do livro dos Assentos dos Mortos, daquele ano de 1896, a folha 3 e seguintes, onde foram exarados os seguintes assentos de óbitos, com os números à margem, que reproduzimos assim: N. 127 MANOEL DE MEDEIROS MARQUINHO, marítimo, de 38 anos de idade, casado com Maria Jacinta, falecida na inundação de águas e não foi sepultado no cemitério por não mais aparecer o seu cadáver. E continua: N. 128 MARIA JACINTA, casada com Manoel de Medeiros Marquinho, de 36 anos de idade. Deixou dois filhos menores. Não foi a sepultar no cemitério por não mais aparecer o seu cadáver. N. 129 LAUREANO, de seis anos de idade, filho de Manoel de Medeiros Marquinho, marítimo, e de Maria Jacinta. Não foi a sepultar no cemitério por não mais aparecer o seu cadáver. N. 130 ERNESTINA, de 4 anos de idade, filha de Manoel de Medeiros Marquinho, marítimo, e de Maria Jacinta. Não foi sepultada no cemitério por não mais aparecer o seu cadáver. N. 131 JÚLIO, de 11 meses de idade, filho de Manoel de Medeiros Marquinho, marítimo, e de Maria Jacinta. Não foi sepultado no cemitério por não mais aparecer o seu cadáver. N. 132 JACINTA ROSA DA CONCEIÇÃO, de 57 anos de idade, padeira, viúva de Victorino Ferreira Simões, naturais da Ribeira Quente. Não foi a sepultar no cemitério por não mais aparecer o seu cadáver. N. 133 JOAQUIM PACHECO ISABEL, casado com Maria Jacinta, de 76 anos de idade, campónio. Não foi sepultado no cemitério por não mais aparecer o seu cadáver. N. 134 UMBELINA ROSA CARÇAREIRA, viúva de Mariano Moniz Barreto, de 70 anos de idade. Não foi sepultada no cemitério por não mais aparecer o seu cadáver. N. 135 FRANCISCO JERÓNIMO FERREIRA, proprietário, de 79 anos de idade, viúvo de D. Maria do Carmo Borges d’Oliveira, naturais da Vila da Ribeira Grande. Foi sepultado no cemitério público de Santa barbara. N. 136 MARIANO DE SOUSA CHIÔTA, de 23 anos de idade, solteiro, pastor, da Lomba do Botão. Foi sepultado no cemitério público de Santa Barbara. N. 137 MANOEL DE SOUSA CHIÔTA, de 30 anos de idade, pastor, casado com Rosa Borges, da Lomba do Pomar. Não foi sepultado no cemitério por não mais aparecer o seu cadáver. N. 138 D. MARIA HELENA, de 77 anos de idade, viúva de José Francisco de Medeiros, filha legítima de José Joaquim d’Amaral Vasconcelos e de D. Maria Cândida de Sá Bettencourt, naturais de São Pedro do lugar do Nordestinho. Não foi a sepultar no cemitério por não mais aparecer o seu cadáver. A terminar quero realçar que é muito importante dar a conhecer a todos os povoacenses a nossa história, as nossas raízes. Aqui está mais um forte exemplo do muito que este concelho tem para dar a conhecer a nós próprios e a quem nos visita. Aposto que a maioria dos povoacenses desconhecia o significado deste memorial implantado no Bairro da Caridade (Comissão). O lugar onde desembarcaram os primeiros povoadores da ilha de São Miguel tem muito para ser explorado, tem muito para dar a conhecer, infelizmente também tem muito património destruído, mas o que resta pode contribuir de forma muito positiva e agradável para o desenvolvimento do nosso concelho. It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our member, past Vice President, and good friend - Joseph Vincent Arruda. June 30, 1967 - June 21, 2020... Some people knew him as Joe, but most of us called him Vincent! Vincent was a devoted member of Santo Cristo Society. He loved to joke around and always kept you laughing. He had a great big heart, and his kindness showed through because he was willing to do whatever it took to help you, without fail. The memories of Vincent will always remain in our hearts and minds, and these memories will be deeply cherished. He will be greatly missed!! Our condolences to the Arruda Family - may God give you strength in this difficult time. Services for Joseph Vincent will be held at Sneider & Sullivan O’Connell’s in San Mateo (link below). Due to COVID 19, the number of people who can attend is limited to 50 which will be family. Sneider & Sullivan will broadcast (live feed) services and mass. They will have a link on their site for this, if you would like to pray with the family. There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date when it is deemed to be a safer time to gather.
