Missing your SCD class? Fabulous use of toilet paper as ghosts and virtual position partners. From the Covid Collection, The Toilet Roll Reel 3x32R

Santa Rosa Scottish Dancers 13.11.2020

To all Scottish Country dancers In this uncertain time, the Santa Rosa class of the RSCDS San Francisco Branch has unfortunately had to cancel our Beginners’ Ball which has celebrated new dancers every year since 1997. But wait! We still want to celebrate the event, so we are hosting an online ceilidh via Zoom. To get the Ball rolling, we are sending out this inquiry to find out how many would be interested in attending and also who might like to contribute a ceilidh ac...t, whether it be a song, a dance, a story, play music, tell a joke, etc., etc., and, of course, etc. And with the technology available to us today, we are opening up this inquiry not only to our local Branch, but to all dancers around the world via Facebook. The event will still be June 20th but will be held in the afternoon Pacific Time to make it easier for young folk to participate and also any attendees from different time zones. If you are interested, please message us so your e-mail address can be used for the invite via Zoom on the day of the event. If you would like to present a ceilidh act, please indicate what your performance will include. We ask that you keep the length of the ceilidh act to no more than 5 minutes. This is still a celebration for new dancers so let’s show them just how welcoming a community we are by making this a grand party!

Hello, All While classes are still on hiatus for May, this week we offer a little nostalgia from past Scottish Games. At this time the 2020 Games are still scheduled, but that may change. We will keep you informed once we know the outcome. In the meantime, if it does happen please let Ron or Gary know if you are interested in participating. Now, on with the show!... The first link offers a view of our Santa Rosa adjudication teams from 2014. The playlist includes the Monday night class, the Youth class and the Challenge class. My how we've grown (at least some of us - others are just getting grayer)! The second link goes even further back to 1994, when Ron's school at the time, The Sierra-Pacific Academy of Scottish Arts, performed at half time during the Jean Patrick dance. The Games had just moved to Pleasanton after a lengthy stint in Santa Rosa. Please ignore the date listed in the title (1993) - I thought this was Santa Rosa, but Ron said it was a hall in Livermore. (NOTE: This is from an old VHS tape so the quality is not the best.) Enjoy! Ron and Gary https://www.youtube.com/playlist https://youtu.be/sOqhUqyZMtY

For your enjoyment, a message from Ron and Gary! ******************************* Hello!... Here is something we put together to share with you. We hope to share other tidbits during this time of SIP. Hope you and yours are staying safe and healthy! Cheers, Ron and Gary ******************************* A glimpse of the formation of what is now known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society In 1923, Mrs. Stewart and Miss Milligan started the movement which is now worldwide and is known as The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society. Mrs. Ysobel Stewart of Fasnacloich, at that time a Commissioner of Girl Guides in Ayrshire, had learned Scottish country dancing in her youth and was teaching it to her Guides as enthusiastically as Miss Milligan was to her students at Jordanhill Teacher Training School for Physical Education. Mrs. Stewart felt strongly that an effort should be made to preserve the old dances, but, since she was not a professional teacher, thought it advisable to seek help. She approached Mr. James Michael Diack of Paterson, the music publishers in Glasgow. Mr. Diack’s son described that first contact thus: I remember so well the day when Mrs. Stewart called at my father’s office in Glasgow and told him about her idea of a Scottish Country Dance Society. He at once thought of Miss Milligan, whom he knew very well through his work as Superintendent of Music in schools. He introduced the two of them, I think the same day, and they were both very grateful." At the end of January 1924, Book 1 of the Scottish Country Dance Society was issued and 1,165 copies were sold! The first dance in Book 1 is Petronella. The three videos links here are for: Petronella https://youtu.be/mq5wwJbRX4w Miss Milligan’s Strathspey (Paris Branch) https://youtu.be/V8_NjUHS-a4 Mrs. Steward of Fasnacloich (Edinburgh Branch) https://youtu.be/DtJXZT-2wa4
