SOSC to Cancel Practices Through 4/12 & Some Events Due to the Coronavirus In the interest of the health and safety of the Special Olympics Southern California community and due to growing concern of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), we have made the following decisions effective immediately. We are cancelling all sports trainings, coach trainings, and competitions through April 12. By Thursday, March 26, we will have an update on the status of sports trainings, coach tra...inings, and competitions that are currently scheduled for after April 12. For all school-related events and activities, we will follow the lead of the schools and school districts on whether we host, modify, postpone, or cancel them. If any school event or activity is canceled, postponed, or modified, we will contact all people involved, update the online event calendar, and post on social media as soon as possible. We are postponing the Guardian Bowl fundraiser that is on Saturday, March 14 and will provide an update on the new date for the event by April 3. We are evaluating the risk level for other fundraising events and meetings, and we will update you on those in a separate communication sent by Friday, March 13. For all events and coach trainings that SOSC cancels, we will make attempts to reschedule them at a later date. The health and safety of the Special Olympics Southern California community, including our athletes, coaches, volunteers, and employees, are our top priority. Due to the medical conditions of some people with intellectual disabilities, the nature of close and physical contact while playing sports, and the increased exposure to the virus, our athletes are at a higher risk of contracting the virus, including a severe case. After consulting with our Official Health Partner, Kaiser Permanente; local authorities; and our partners on how to move forward, we believe cancelling all sports trainings, coach trainings, and competitions through April 12 is in the best interest of the Special Olympics community. We will continue to monitor the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) daily as this is a quickly evolving situation, and we will update you if other programming is modified and as new information arises. Everyone at SOSC wishes you well and to take care. The best prevention against COVID-19 remains taking regular health precautions so we put together some tips to help you stay healthy. You can view them at https://wearesosc.org//coronavirus-disease-covid-19-what-/. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your local field office (www.sosc.org/programs). Thank you!
